Ya, but maybe they were drawn in the the PTBNL. I don't know if the terms is a choice of a few or a statistic-based determination, but maybe Lars (unlikely as they already got a 1B) or Bowden are in it too. I thought they'd have gotten more out of it though.
But the Cubs don't have much to offer better than Casey Kelley, at least from the scouting reports of his I've read.

Maybe the scouting reports are good on him, but his stats in the minors are not too promising. He's still young and could be figured out.

The Cubs farm system is good, but not outstanding. They do have good players, and if they really wnatesd too, they could have acquired Gonzo.
But, what really hurts is the contract Gonzo wants the Cubs have no 1B in their minors. The RS have 3 (Rizzo and Anderson).

Apparently the Cubs offered Cashner, Carpenter, Lee, and another player but the Padres said no. So IDK, I guess they just wanted the 1B.
