This will turn out to be less than an intelligent move. Neither of the two between the pipes are at best #2's. The signing could have waited, I don't think there are any lineups waiting to sign him. Hope the summer brings a clear head to management...they need it!

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Like I said the excuse of him being too expensive doesn't make much sense compared to what they are dealing with right now and they've dealt with in the past. Montador may be done, I don't see O'Donnel coming back, I don't see Brunnette coming back (whether Beckett leaps or not), and I don't see Lepisto coming back. They're going to have close to 7 million in cap space. Do you really want to not re-sign a guy, as long as it's not unreasonable, that you KNOW and have seen making as much an impact on the team as he does just to try and take a chance to find another player like that in the offseason? Who might be at or around the same price tag anyways?

Looking at Capgeek, we may not be as dire as we were last year. Looking at the signed roster players we have next year, we have 20 contracts, 5 of them are two-way. Add Olesz and that makes 21. by my count, that means going into the FA season, assuming a similar cap into next year, we'll have over 4M in space to resign Mayers, Oduya, and Bollig (Who may be exempt). Everyone else (Brunette, Morrisson, Lepisto, and O'donnel I consider "expendible).

It might be tight. Waiving Olesz can help, along with losing Frolik.

Believe me, I want to keep Mayers, Oduya, and Bollig. I just think it will realistically take ditching one or both of Frolik and Olesz.

What about trading Hammer, he just hasn't seemed to been able to achieve his potential.

Or just continuing to eat Olesz's contract. I don't really care how they go about it, but it's kinda weird to see all these posts about how important Oduya turned out to be and how much of an impact he is in the same way as Campbell was and then the logic clash of.....but now he's too expensive to bring back.....because he's third pairing..etc. I don't care where Q has him in the starting line up, we all know that's throwaway when it comes the game actually being played. He's averaged over 24 minutes with the Hawks, that's not third pair minutes. And again, too expensive compared to what when we all have seen the difference he makes? IF he wants crazy money, yeah sure, understandable. But that remains to be seen.

Again under the 3rd pairing idea (which is where he started) he is simply too expensive for the amount of minutes he'd play as a 3rd pair guy. 2nd pair guy 3.5 mill is about the right price. Also still want Soupy back

I don't care where he started. Averaging over 24 minutes a game is not third pairing. Of all the things to use as a point, why would you use where Q starts guys or what pairing a d-man (or any player and what line he starts off on for that matter) is listed as on this team with this coach?

No shit. I said I did not notice Q moved Hammer back. Sorry I don't check the average minutes played over the last 10 games. Here is what I am saying. Point Blank. 3.5 million dollars for a 3rd pair Dman is too much money. For a 2nd pair Dman is about the right price for a good one. I don't give a **** who the coach is or anything else. Do you understand?

get rid of Hammer, and next year you will notice how important he was. He's the perfect silent defensemen. He will play 20+ minutes without you even noticing, and block 5 shots a night too.

Of course over 3 million is too much for a third pairing playing third pair minutes, that's common sense. How you started this discussion there was confusion on whether or not you believed that he's being used or will be used as a third pairing with those kind of minutes. Which, I don't know, you tell me, did you believe that way before I told you what his average ice time was (which is actually over 18 games with the Hawks at over 24 min and averaging about 20 minutes the rest of the season with Winnipeg)? Shouldn't be too hard to understand that he hasn't been used that way on the Hawks, especially given how much he's helped them.

When you said it I went and checked the depth chart and even said he moved Oduya to 2nd pair. I did not know he did that. When he was acquired it was said he was going to be 3rd pair. Prior to checking the depth chart I did not know he was 2nd pair (outside of the Keith suspension which wasn't he first pair?) Forgive me for not being all knowing.

Long story short: Oduya is the closest the Hawks have come to filling the Campbell vacuum, therefore negotiate a reasonable deal while it's still potentially around.

I said before the trade deadline we should make room for rookies, meaning get rid of deadbeats like O'Donnell. The sqawking in the chicken house could be heard all the way to The Committed Indian country!

And don't take this job too seriously: it's entertainment at best.

The impact was not from Oduya but from a type of player that does the things he does, which can be had for a lot cheaper than what Johny may be asking. We may even have one in the farm somewhere. I like him a lot, and I like what he's done for the team, but for the most part all it has been is the stability of a bottom pair and minute relief for the top guys. You can find that for much cheaper. I hope he resigns but not at the expense of over paying.

But he plays some PP minutes and makes good outlet passes too. Will also kill penalties.

He shouldn't have to play PP minutes which makes it even more fucked up.... EVERYONE should make good outlet passes... and killing penalties is what a good bottom pair guy is supposed to do. Bring back sopel.... /purple.

Have you not been watching the Hawks at all, or what? Why are we talking about depth charts and shit? It's pretty easy to see where and how he's being used by watching a couple of games... or checking his icetime... I'll forgive you for being completely ignorant on the subject. All knowing? You have to know something before you can know everything.

That worked real well with Campoli. Unless Oduya is going to take a pretty meaningful pay cut I don't see him staying. With the CBA suggesting the Cap is coming down, no one is going to risk that kind of money, just like they didn't with Campoli.

Also I would be surprised if Olezs was not bought out at the end of the season. And take the smaller hit for longer.
