Coming off an eight game losing streak, the rumor mill has caught fire with Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman looking at some new options on the trade front concerning the goaltending position. Along with that, the recent addition of Brendan Morrison hasn't exactly satisfied Joel Quenneville's hunger for a productive center.

FORWARDS

Yes, the Blackhawks are still in the hunt for another forward. Some names have dropped off the list, including Edmonton Oilers center Sam Gagner. Although the Blackhawks had a very high interest level in the young center, his price has skyrocketed to an amount Bowman is not willing to pay.

DEREK ROY

CENTER | BUFFALO SABRES

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/roy_derek.jpg[/float]Roy continues to stick on the list as a serious candidate for the Blackhawks. With the teams tumble down the Western Conference standings, the Blackhawks desperation continues to climb.

Bowman has been searching for a second line center since November and plans really have not changed despite the addition of Brendan Morrison.

With the Blackhawks being linked to the Sabres for several weeks now, Roy looks like a hot candidate for forwards. He has one-year left on his contract for a hefty cap hit of $4 million, but the Hawks have no problem taking that type of salary on to solidify their top-six forwards.

TON'S TAKE: Morrison has not shown enough to take on the role that the Blackhawks expected of him. Since being acquired, his ice-time has dropped significantly and demoted to the 4th line. Roy has struggled this season, but for the right price he would be a great addition.

TUOMO RUUTU

LEFT WING | CAROLINA HURRICANES

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/ruutu_tuomo.jpg[/float]Similar to the situation of Tim Gleason weeks ago, the Blackhawks chances of acquiring the forward hinges on whether or not Rutherford can sign Ruutu to a contract extension.

Recent reports are that the Hurricanes are trying to come to terms with Ruutu, but lately, it seems as if both sides are not getting any closer. If this continues, Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford will put out an offer that Ruutu will either take or leave.

"We have now made re-signing Tuomo a priority," Rutherford said. "If we're not able to agree, both sides need to have some leeway and some options. We need to make a decision and he needs to make a decision."

Chicago remains a hot candidate for Tuomo to land, along with the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, and a slew of other teams.

TON'S TAKE: Rutherford did a great job in re-signing Gleason for a good price and term, but I don't think he'll be as lucky with Ruutu. He wants a long-term deal, I'm sure the Hurricanes agree, but the actual salary has always been an issue for Ruutu. The question is, will they pay up? Or will they cut their losses and cash in?

ADAM BURISH

CENTER/WING | DALLAS STARS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/burish_adam.jpg[/float]It has been reported that Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is indeed talking to the Dallas Stars about returning Adam Burish to Chicago. The former Blackhawk is set to become a UFA this summer and has a cap hit of $1.15 million.

Burish would be an injection of energy into an otherwise dull line-up, also providing added chemistry in helping the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010.

In 38 games this season, Burish has scored 4 goals and 8 assists for a total of 12 points, also adding 48 PIMs and a plus-1 rating.

TON'S TAKE: Burish isn't a second line center, a goalie, or a defenseman. So he doesn't exactly fit the bill of what the Blackhawks want but I don't think anyone can really argue that he wouldn't be an improvement of what the Blackhawks are currently icing on their bottom two lines. The energy in the locker room alone could help keep them alive.

DEFENSEMAN

Plenty of defenseman have dropped off the list in the last few weeks, including Tim Gleason and Francois Beauchemin. Stan Bowman has admitted recently that the market for a defenseman isn't as active as he would like, so he may be willing to explore more options than just one particular type of defenseman.

"There's a lot of teams looking for a defenseman, so I think probably a few weeks ago people wouldn't have expected Gleason to be signed," Bowman told reporters recently. "We're going to listen to whatever's out there."

CHRIS CAMPOLI

DEFENSEMAN | MONTREAL CANADIENS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/campoli_chris.jpg[/float]Since returning from a fluke injury earlier in the season, Campoli has found himself as an active contributor to the Canadiens line-up.

With the Blackhawks preferring a decent puck moving defenseman with solid skating skills, Campoli seems to fit the bill most with others off the market.

In 18 games this season, Campoli has contributed 1 goal and 3 assists for the Canadiens. With his return, he has been seeing power-play time with Montreal and regularly sees over 15 minutes of ice-time on a nightly basis.

TON'S TAKE: Campoli would make sense, with his prior history, it would be a comfortable transition and provide instant chemistry. With Stan overturning the roster pretty much every season, a little bit of chemistry should be welcomed over someone with a little more talent than Chris has.

ANDY SUTTON

DEFENSEMAN | EDMONTON OILERS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/sutton_andy.jpg[/float]The Oilers won't make the playoffs this season, it's been well known that they will be sellers for quite some time now. Not many teams are in their situation and they will have an upper hand in pawning off the band-aids of their roster.

Sutton is among the names that the Blackhawks have been looking at. Although they prefer puck movement over brawn, they may not have much of an option and considering they have been interested in several pieces of the Oilers line-up, they have certainly had a great view of Sutton during that time.

That said, it is believed that the Oilers are actually looking to re-sign Sutton to a one-year deal for under $2 million. If he does sign, scratch another defenseman off the trade block.

Sutton has appeared in 33 games this season, scoring 3 goals and 6 assists. The big defenseman has also added 57 hits and 56 PIM.

TON'S TAKE: Not sure Sutton is much better than what the Blackhawks currently have slotted at the #6 spot. If there is any defenseman that the Blackhawks should be looking for to help the club, they probably won't find them on an Oilers roster who seems to have their own problems on the back-end. Just wait, this is the precursor to Cam Barker rumors.

NICKLAS GROSSMAN

DEFENSEMAN | DALLAS STARS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/grossman_nicklas.jpg[/float]The Stars are beginning to look like another team that may start to build towards next year. With Nicklas Grossman set to become a UFA, the Blackhawks might swoop in and add him to the roster along with Burish.

The Stars are looking to add some youth and draft picks, which is something the Blackhawks can afford to part with.

Grossman has notched 5 assists in 51 games along with 92 hits and 100 blocked shots. Not only is he capable of logging minutes on the penalty kill, but he's pretty good at it too.

TON'S TAKE: He would be a solid addition. Very similar to a Hjalmarsson-type, perhaps not as effective but he would be a big improvement over anyone currently taking up the 6th defensive spot. Let's face it, anyone halfway decent would help our penalty kill right now. The question is, if acquired, will Quenneville even slot him correctly? Montador was suppose to be a PK defenseman too.

JOHNNY ODUYA

DEFENSEMAN | WINNIPEG JETS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/oduya_johnny.jpg[/float]Less likely than the first two candidates, Johnny Oduya enters the circle of Blackhawk rumors. With the Jets remaining in the balance for a playoff push, things may not come to fruition until the deadline approaches. If the Jets decide to sell, Oduya is a prime candidate to becoming available and Bowman will be in the mix.

Stan stated many times in the past few weeks that the Blackhawks are looking for a good puck moving defenseman. Although Oduya lacks in the size and physical department he is a spot on candidate to fill the puck moving gap.

TON'S TAKE: Probably the best choice for a puck moving defenseman. There really aren't many out there right now and Oduya would be a better option than anything the Blackhawks currently have on their bottom pairing. Winnipeg is a team that just doesn't know where they stand right now, so we'll have to wait and see how things play out.

GOALTENDERS

Yes, the Blackhawks have finally entered the pool of teams interested in a goaltender. They didn't just easy their way in either, they dove off the high dive.

NIKOLAI KHABIBULIN

GOALTENDER | EDMONTON OILERS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/khabibulin_nikolai.jpg[/float]The hottest topic lately for the Blackhawks has been the goaltending position with Corey Crawford and Ray Emery unable to grab a hold of the reigns. With the Blackhawks connection to the Edmonton Oilers all season, it is speculated that they may be looking at multiple players, but it is reported that Khabibulin is now the focus.

It's no secret that the Blackhawks have been scouting the Oilers lately, including tonight against the Senators. Considering they are already familiar with Khabibulin they could be looking for a package.

In 32 games this season, Khabibulin has a 12-16-4 record, including 2 shutouts coupled with a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average. His cap hit is at $3.75 million and is extended for one more year beyond this season.

TON'S TAKE: Khabby has struggled at times this season, he is nearing the end of his career, and has been a flat out disappointment in Edmonton according to media sources. That said, he may be an improvement over what the Blackhawks currently have. I personally think he has been treated unfairly as an Oiler and has done a decent job. The question is, what happens to Corey Crawford and would it really be worth damaging him even further?

EVGENI NABOKOV

GOALTENDER | NEW YORK ISLANDERS

[float='left']http://www.indianheadnation.com/ccs_files/Player%20Cards/nabokov_evgeni.jpg[/float]The Islanders have fielded phone calls on Nabokov for quite some time now and it is said that Stan Bowman may look to get into the mix.

However, Islanders GM Garth Snow has stated that he has no plans on trading the aging goaltender but that could mean that he hasn't found the right offer yet.

The Blackhawks have also scouted the Islanders multiple times this season, and have had contact with the organization several times.

Nabokov has appeared in 29 games this year, compiling a 13-14-0 record along with 2 shutouts. He's had a mint save percentage of .923 and goals against average of 2.29.

TON'S TAKE: If they have to pick up a goaltender, I would be more comfortable with Nabokov. But quite honestly, I don't think it's a talent issue that Chicago is having right now. Never-the-less, a shake up is needed and perhaps it's the goaltending position that will be on the receiving end.

Ruutu is not really a center. Sutton just re-signed with Edm. Roy has another year at $4M which doesn't fit with the supposed edict of no more salary comittment beyond this season. Khaby might be better than Crawford/Emery but he's not a top-3 goalie in the world which is what is needed with the Hawks defense. Snow will have other suitors lined up for Nabokov so he will carry a hefty price tag. Allen is one of the only remaining UFA d-men that might actually hit the trade market - another hefty price tag.

At this point it's a seller's market and the best move would be for the Hawks to cash in whatever they can get for O'Donnell, Brunette, maybe even get someone to bite on Montador and the 3 years left on his contract.

Don't see anywhere that says Ruutu is a center ebon. Hawks need a top 6 physical lower also. Ruutu fits the bill.

Nice write up ton. Agree with most of it.

Keep forgetting about Roy. I wouldn't dislike that one.

Jesus, half of these guys are hawks alumni. Campoli? Would he really be an improvement? The pickings are slim this year. Any truth to the Tyler Myers rumor?

While Khabby might, and that's a stretch at might, be better then Crawford, he's isn't going to fair well with the open season the other team is having on shot selection. I don't care who you are; a constant barrage of quality shots against will eventually cause goals against. Sure our goalies have let in some softies, but some of the other ones they have had no chance on because nobody is around to try and defend or put pressure on the shooter.

Ton calls him a center in the first sentence:

"Similar to the situation of Tim Gleason weeks ago, the Blackhawks chances of acquiring the center hinges on whether or not Rutherford can sign Ruutu to a contract extension."

Also, I haven't heard anything about Tyler Myers (ichiwan).

Sutton has officially re-signed with the Oilers this morning (was not official yesterday yet). One-year deal worth $1.5 million, including 250K in games played/if they make the playoffs bonuses. Scratch another defenseman off the list.

The Hawks scouted Habby yesterday. He ended up making 39 saves with a .929 save percentage and won 4-3.

I'd take habby over nabby anyday. One if a playoff performer and the other playoff dud.

I would rather ride our current selection out, replace Emery after the season, then pick up either of those two.

Psssst...... Offensive scoring wins game also.

I've resigned myself to not invest any emotions in players that I would like to see come here as I feel by the end of the deadline we are all going to be disappointed and scratching our heads.

Habby is not going to do shit with this team the way they are playing. This team IMO should make a coaching change first, make Hav. interm coach and go from there. Eveluate him at the end of the season. But I think if this continues which I think it will. I see a coaching change at the end of the season. Look out for Carlylie coming in, since he said he wants anothe gig this offseason.

I can't believe anyone is seriously talking about getting another goalie, let alone Khabibulin. What a joke. The goalies we have are not the reason we can't win games. IF there is one tiny thing wrong with the goalies, it goes back to coaching. Crawford was elected the number one out of camp. Good, leave it that way. When Q started fucking around and playing Emery in mulitple games in a row it created a problem with Crawford's performance and confidence. Q has had this problem quite some time now. While he hasn't exactly been able to rely on goaltenders with Roy or younger Broduer like abilities he does not know how to manage goalies and he is a big reason that they don't stay here for very long. Very few goalies these days can or should play 65+ games a season. When you pick a starter and a back up you play your starter for about 3 games then give him one game off. That is a winning formula that many NHL coaches the last 5 years have gotten away from, and it bites them in the ass over and over again. There have been two dozen good or nearly great goalies moved around the league since the lockout because their coaches refuse to stick with that formula.

It would do this team well to acknowledge the defensive problems, figure out how to start scoring again, and leave the goalies out of the conversation. Neither is to blame for this mess. Neither should be moved right now. Hell, I would resign Ray over the summer too.

Currently, the Hawks are 6th in scoring-- with the losing streak nestled in their minds.

Their goal differential is +3. Hard to win games when the opposition is netting 4 to 5 every other night (it seems). They basically have to be on 1984 Oilers pace to keep up offensively.

I get what you're saying-- this team has no business being SO as many times as they have.

I'm just going to sit with the rest of you and wonder WTF...

You are right that it goes both ways Paul, but if they had control of the puck more in both zones and scored more often, it is a lot harder for the opposition to get in your zone and score on your goalie. Don't forget that the vast majority of goals came in the first few months of the season. If you tracked how many goals we have since Christmas, it paints a very different picture of this team.

The problem starts in our zone. Teams have figured out they can't handle aggresive forechecking. All too often they turn the puck over and it ends up in the net.

Compounding that is our top six forwards always try to stick handle through 3-4 guys at the other blue line, cough it up, and off to the races the other team goes, with the puck ending up in the net.

I don't know what the difference is between November and now. Roster is aboot the same. Maybe it's just Kharma. Seems like the team went tits up since Car-Bomb was a jackass against Edmonton in January.

That's fine. I was just saying of the two I'll take Habby, he's the better playoff goalie. Truthfully I don't want neither. Habby is too old, he's done. Nabby playoff choke artist, don't want anything to do with that.

We really just need a new fucking coach and one new assistant coach.

When is Q's contract up? You think they will just eat it, or make him a senior advisor? Looks to me like the McChickens may be coming home to roost. Can't wait to hear what McDonough Rozner has to say about it
