Rocky should fire McD and get some hockey people to run the franchise, not some smarmy marketing snakes. McD did what was needed, got asses back to the seats, now they need hockey savvy people to keep the team a winner to keep those asses in the seats. A winning team is a big seller, not the dumb sideshows and bobblehead nights.

I hate the fucking guy, but he is really good at what he does. The problem was making him King Shit and placing the whole franchise in his hands. He is the boss whether people like it or not.

The way to solve it is for the owner, the real King Shit, to remind everyone that they have a role to fill and they should not be crossing lines no matter what they think they know about someone else's job.

I would be really happy if McD ended up as some hot shot in the NHL, that would mean he's gone from Chicago.

Agreed it was a mistake making him the head honcho. Rocky ought to remind him who's writing the checks and that he keep away from hockey ops.

The most horrible scenario occured to me...the appple don't fall far from the tree and Rocky is turning into his dad. Soon we'll have Pully hanging out in the UC.

As much as we hate on McDonough he'd be good for the front office of the NHL. Make him VP of Marketing. Say whatever you want about him the guy seems good at marketing (a 8 year old could have marketed the hawks so far but I guess he did good with the cubbies)

I have more fun and considerably less BS when in Rockford or watching the local CHL team. The Hawks lost sight of the fact that a lot of people go to a hockey game for the hockey as opposed to the off ice shenanagans.

I've been thinking that for a while now, about two years really. I was afraid to say it here for fear that I would not convey the message properly and just end up looking like a guy that shit on the messiah who brought us a Cup and home games on TV.

McDick had nothing, i repeat NOTHING to do with asses in the seats. It was the team on the ice that started the resurgence. Also the passing of Dollar Bill did it for some people. But MCDICK had nothing to do with it.

I don't know about that. He did a good job at bringing back a lot of fans buy suckering us into buying all the schlucky tacky cheesy heritage crap. Hey I got suckered into a lot of it myself before it started getting old. The convention shit is probably all him at the roots and how many fans on this board go and support that and will continue to? He has also brought in a new fan base using other techniques and marketing.

It's okay to admit we have all been taken for a ride and have been victoms of good marketing and salesmenship. That's what McDick does best..that's his job and he does that part well. We have just now started to realize that it's been a big corney shit ride and we are starting to see the forest for the trees. We all are now understanding clearer the roll he has had on ice decisions and office decisions where his lack of hockey sense has insulted us fans who do know the game as something more than a Wednesday night out on the town.

Sports business is all good and healthy and fine but when it becomes a bigger game that the one on the ice..then it's flat out fucking stupid.

The stadium started filling up shortly after he was appointed pres because of the exciting young team on the ice. McDick had no time to make any changes that early in his tenure. Yes he is probably responsible for the Winter Classic, and he is definitely worthy of the marketing accolades he's received, but his hiring just coincided with the popularity of a young talented team. That spring the list for season tix exploded, not due to anything he did

It was probably his idea to do the ticket exchange so the Hawks can make money on other people reselling tickets, capitalist fucks.lol

Can Mcdickhead be given some credit for exploiting that young talent and marketing the team as a "future team to watch"? I recall seeing Toews and Kanes faces everywhere I looked their first years in the league and I am sure he dropped a few dollars in the hands of press and the media to bang out their names and the teams name every 2 seconds. I don't know he seemed to advertise that young team and certain players a hell of a lot.

I don't live in the Chicago area so I don't know what sort of PR was going on with the team there locally. But from a far distance it was pretty exploitive. There were story line with the Hawks that every hockey broacaster wanted to cover. The new owner and his new approach to the Hawks and the important original 6 Hawks coming back to life and being rejuvinated...how the league had missed them etc etc. Mcdick may not have had a hand in any of that on ice rejuvination but he was good at exploiting it for marketing gains and making sure everyone kept talking about it. Honestly the 2008/09 season there was nothing but Blackhawks talk everywhere and I am sure McDick made sure that was happening.

They were and still are everywhere.

You are more likely to ask a random kid if he know's who Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane is and them tell you correctly over Derrick Rose, Starlin Castro, Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher.

That's crazy. I mean in Vancouver which is a hockey hot bed you see the Sedin pics here and there on bus stops, the subways stops etc and obviously the Canucks are the talk in newspapers but it's pretty subtle on the streets as far as advertising individual Canuck players go. I guess when you aren't competeing for attention with other local sports figures and teams it can cut the advertising dollars down. I mean there is no threat of Vancouverites forgetting that the Canucks exist even though they did have some lean years in the 80's and 90's where attendance wasn't so great even with no competition in the city. 94 pretty much made the Canucks the big money making franchise they are now (so with that I agree success on the ice is pretty much key..Leafs are an anomoly for other reasons).

I find that pretty amazing though esp in a city that I do know has a rich strong hockey following and history but is one that really gets its fires going bigger when it comes to football, basketball and baseball. Maybe I have a pre-exsisting idiology of the Chicago sports market that is incorrect or McDick really has done a great marketing campaign over the last 3 years to get the names out there. Or maybe a little of both.

Before they won the Cup or after? Because the other three teams you mention didn't win anything. One of them was really bad and the other two recently good. Although I think as many know who Rose is as know Toews and Kane. Part of where the Bulls finished last year as a team and him winning the MVP.

All ultimately revolves around winning.

He had a part, and a larger part than WWW dying....but his part is nothing without the winning. Winning will always get fans in the seats.

Heck the Bulls don't market heavily and several years ago I was able to get in w/o a ticket because I know the people working the club/KO gate and just told them I forgot my ticket (along with a reservation) to the club. Why? Because no one was there and they sucked. Start winning and everyone is back and no massive marketing.

it's all the team. The crowds were coming back to the UC when they were still saying "Red Rising"

Most of China know who Derrick Rose is, there's no way more people in Chicago, where he's from, know Toews and Kane over him.

That was more Boland and Sharp being in the line up at Center than anything.

Remember the year prior they were 6 games from winning the Stanley Cup.

5 games. If memory serves me correctly, we lost the WCF in 5 games, not four.
