"Our players -- the effort is there," Bowman said. "They're as frustrated as anybody, you can watch it on the ice. It's not working. There's no disputing that, but I don't buy that assertion at all. These players are on board with us. They believe in this group. We're not far. We need to get this turned around, but we're not far from making it work."

So you fucking change it. If the coach won't change it fire him and get one that will. FUCKING DUH!

Wasted Season? You realize all they have to do is make the playoffs right? And they are still in line to do that. I am pissed that everythign is crashing down but I still expect them to make the playoffs, they can't lose every game. If the break through they can just as easily real of 8 of 10.

sigh....I know. I'm just used to feeling this way about the Bears. The hawks....the hawks I had hope, I knew what the team was capable of. I can see how good they can be and I see it ruined by inept coaching.

Toews and Kane....what could have been....

Hawks GM stands by Joel Quenneville

Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman gave coach Joel Quenneville a vote of confidence Monday amid the team's eight-game winless streak.

I'm very confident in Joel's ability, our coaching staff's ability.” -- Stan Bowman

"That's not the concern for me at all," Bowman told Comcast SportsNet Chicago. "I'm very confident in Joel's ability, our coaching staff's ability."

Quenneville addressed the matter after practice Monday when he was asked if he needed to hear Bowman's support.

"I'm confident in what I do, and I look forward to the challenge ... to instill to our group a way to win and have a nice environment around here that can only get better as we go along," Quenneville said. "Hopefully we can look back at the position we are in today and it makes us a better and stronger team. It makes me a better coach."

Bowman rejected the notion that players are tuning out Quenneville, who guided the Blackhawks to the 2009-10 Stanley Cup title, snapping a 48-year drought.

The Blackhawks were tied for the most points in the league on Jan. 19, but their streak -- which included one overtime loss -- has dropped them into the sixth spot in the Western Conference. It's the Blackhawks' worst skid since an eight-game winless streak during the 2007-08 season.

Much of the focus has been placed on the goaltending. Chicago still hasn't found a replacement for Antti Niemi, who led the team to the Cup. The Blackhawks felt an arbitrator's number was too high to sign Niemi, who then signed with the San Jose Sharks.

Chicago's Ray Emery is 39th in the NHL with a .901 save percentage while Corey Crawford is 43rd at .898. Niemi is 22nd at .917.

But Bowman said he's not looking for a replacement before the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

"We're not focused on goaltending. We're really not," Bowman told the network. "I know there's a lot of talk about that, but internally we have to focus on the guys we have and turning it around from within."

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, whose team has the most points in the NHL, was asked by reporters Monday if he would be stunned if Quenneville were fired.

"Absolutely ... 100 percent," he said.

Babcock said the Blackhawks remain a potent team and there's no reason for them to panic.

"Joel Quenneville's the coach. They've got real good players. Things aren't going the way they wanted right now," Babcock told reporters. "They're still a very dangerous team.

"A few weeks ago, everyone thought Chicago was going to win the West. I mean, I wouldn't get in a big panic. Now, if I was them I would be in a panic because that's what you do when you're the coach there ... not in a panic, but it'd be urgency. And I'm sure Joel's feeling that right now. You'd rather it was them than you, but a little adversity never killed anybody. It's just how you respond to it."

**** you optimist. I want Q gone, I don't want wins now. I want a new coach so we can win more later. So we don't sit there and play mediocre hockey for the next 5 years and waste the prime years of our core.

I know I'm being a bit extremist today but I really would rather chalk this season up as a lose and get new coaching over keeping the coaching we have.

Chicago Blackhawks: Why It's Time to Fire Mike Kitchen

By Jim Weihofen

(Correspondent) on February 11, 2012

Lost in the chaos of the post-Cup fire sale for the Chicago Blackhawks was the departure of assistant coach John Torchetti. With playoff heroes Antii Niemi, Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd leaving town, along with fan favorites Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Adam Burish and John Madden, fans barely took notice of Torchetti's departure.

The reasoning was solid, you'd just lost your entire third line, a very likeable defenseman, your starting goalie and a converted D-man who was skating on the first line with the most exciting young forward tandem in the league. Besides, the Hawks brought in Mike Kitchen, who had a history with vaunted head coach Joel Quenneville, so surely nothing was really the matter with this.

How wrong this would prove. Torchetti left to become an associate coach with the then-Atlanta Thrashers, joining many of the Hawks' jettisoned players. Right about then, the coaching nightmares began.

In 2010-11, the Blackhawks defense took a major step backwards. Sure, losing Brent Sopel hurt, and the regression of Nick Boynton back to his career norms didn't help, but the PK went from fourth in the league at 89.3 percent to a miserable 79.2 percent.

Who was in charge of the PK? You guessed it, Mike Kitchen.

So, for this season, Kitchen and Mike Haviland switched roles. The PK stayed awful, as the defense is arguably worse for wear this season over last, mainly due to the departure of Brian Campbell, and finding no suitable replacement, in addition to the loss of gritty penalty killers like Tomas Kopecky and Troy Brouwer.

The power play, however, now coached by Kitchen, dropped from fourth in the league at 23.5 percent under Haviland in 2010-11, to a paltry 17.9 percent this season, good for 14th in the league.

Kitchen's success as a coach has been questionable at best, as is evidenced by his time as the St. Louis Blues head coach. When Quenneville was fired towards the end of the 2003-04 season, Kitchen stepped into his spot, and got the Blues into the playoffs, losing in the first round, but still instilling some hope.

The next season in St. Louis was an utter nightmare. The Blues went from a playoff team to an awful 21-46-15 under Kitchen's reign, and with equal levels of ineptitude to start the next season, Kitchen was replaced by Andy Murray after starting the season at 7-17-4. Murray rallied the Blues to finish the season at 27-18-11, though they still missed the playoffs.

Kitchen went on to be an assistant in Florida for the next three seasons, during which time the Panthers went a total of 111-102-33, just missing a playoff spot in 2008-09. None of their seasons were very successful, and Kitchen's last in Florida saw the Panthers finish 14th in the Eastern Conference.

Still, Quenneville turned to his old friend to take Torchetti's spot. While they never missed the playoffs together, they also never even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals.

With the team's struggles, and Stan Bowman's refusal to make a big move to fix the team, letting Kitchen seek greener pastures may be the only way to save this season.

Precisely.

Also for good measure how's about NOT playing Leddy on the PP and letting someone other than Keith be the point? I don't know like maybe Hossa at the point since some of his goals his year have been some sweetass slappers---a tool he doesn't trot out too often so you know opponents might actually get a little discombobulated to see him out there. . .you know, just silly shit like trying different shit, a.k.a. "coaching".

I don't have any issue with Leddy on the PP, because he's one of the few defensemen the Hawks have that makes QUICK decisions with the puck up there on the point. I have issue with the rest of the PP setup though. You know, like not switching up the pointmen so they are in a one-timer position? I've all but given up hope at this point though. This team with this coaching staff will be lucky to make the playoffs.

Not long ago, #10 was playing center when the beloved hoisted the Cup. Okay, so he prefers to play the wing and Q will acquiesce to Sharp's desires. Shame. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Only thing is, moving Sharp to center is not a desperate measure.

But Sharp doesn't like playing center. Who is the coach to tell a guy he should play where he helps the team most, not where he prefers to play?

Pfft.
