Sorry if this was already posted, it's almost enough for me to ask for my money back.

A future commissioner?

9:55AM ET

NHL

While it doesn't appear that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is stepping aside any time in the near future, there is a train of thought that Blackhawks' president John McDonough could take over if need be.

McDonough shot down those rumors in The New York Times on Sunday.

Still, if the time comes to search for a new commissioner, McDonough could be at the top of the list. He oversaw one of the quickest turnarounds in hockey history with the Hawks, from last place in 2007, to Stanley Cup champions this past season.
Complete with link to NY Times BS article.

Hockey will never become popular in the USA, at least nothing comparable to the overall popularity of baseball, football, basketball ...

Heck, soccer may someday be more popular than hockey!

Here comes $3.50 worth of 2 cents.

McD as Commish? Do it.

Why you ask? Look at the marketing job he has done with the Hawks. He, with his right hand men, have made the Hawks the hottest ticket in the city. Cubs? Sure, they still draw, but they aren't gonna unite the cities sports fans. Sox? Sure, they are hot right now, but will they make a strong run deep into October? Time will tell. Bears? Riiiiight. Half this area are Packers fans. Soccer will not be more popular then the Hawks. Sure it is the worlds sport, but It isn't gonna catch on here. I have been hearing for 30 years that soccer is gonna take hold here in the States. How much longer is it gonna take?

The argument can be made that he really has done nothing, and that the fans were gonna come back after Mr. Wirtz passed, and the team that's on the ice, consistently winning, would pull more folks in. I will let you have that. Those folks were coming back no matter what, but if they didn't win, it would probably take longer. However, with his nickname here (McSplash), there is no doubt in my mind that the most non-hockey person here in Chicago started to pay attention to the Hawks. Even if for a just a fleeting moment. Perhaps following the scores in the paper. Once the playoffs started, they perhaps watched a few minutes on tv. They deper they went maybe they watched a whole game, dare I say, maybe bought a ridiculously priced ticket. Maybe bought a shirt, a hat, whatever. When they won the Cup, I have no doubt that same fella (or lady) went to the rally, bought another shirt, a sweater, whatever. Maybe that person will make it out to a few games this upcoming season. And not wait for the whistle.

That, believe it or not is a good thing. That means the team is making money, the NHL is making money, and the players are making 54% of all the merchandise sales. Remember that? It's in the CBA. The players are making more of the merch then the team, or so I have been lead to believe.

Going to a Hawks game is an event, like it was in the the 60's, and the early 90's. It is great for the team, for the players, for the league, and hell, it's even good for the AHL, and for the ice rinks around the area, as kids watch Toews and Kane, and want to play like them.

With all that said, it won't happen.

I firmly believe the current commish and his fellas, and probably a good chunk of the GM's don't like him. They can see, just like all of us, how slimey he is. How underhanded he is.

Perhaps that's what the NHL needs, but I just don't see it happening. Shame too, as I would like to get him outta here.

Did you need to be fanned and toweled off after typing all that, Jako?

That's the most I've ever seen you write ever.

I also agree, except the part about Bettman not liking him. They've been very buddy, buddy.

I am light-headed and sweaty, although that just may be the massive coronary I am about to have. Besides, this is the only place I can get all my thoughts out with having RK interrupt me.

I have no doubt they are best of friends. Or at least seemingly. If McD does have a slight inclination for Bettmans gig, I would wager dollars to doughnuts Bettman would feel threatened, but I see what you are saying. Also, with the fact that the Hawks are doing what they are, no doubt the commish is happy with the revenue.

I also think the Commish doesn't like being upstaged.

i only skimmed the article, but it sounds like bullshit to me.

Hawks won the Cup. When a team wins championship, players are more coveted by other teams, and same for others in the organization. Coaches, assistant coaches and asst. gm's are hired by other teams, and everybody wants players who have won a Cup. (for example, a big reason we gave madden 2.75 mill last year.) So maybe some Bettman haters/wishful thinkers would like to see a guy like McD in charge who is more in touch with fan satisfaction and marketing. You think McD would have let his "brand" settle for the Outdoor Life Network? Yeah right.

But i think the owners love Bettman and I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon. but i guess newspapers can write articles that say anything. REally this isn't even worthy of a thread except for the sideshow contest of who can post the most hateful attack on McD.

Great post Jako. My first thought was **** McDonough as Commish, but your article really put the other side into perspective.

I'd be afraid of the shadiness that he would bring to the league in order to make it popular at all costs. You think drafts are rigged now, wait till everything becomes Illinois style.

I think McD would love to have the Hawks on ESPN or another major network. I think McD would remediate that PDQ, and the NHL would gain in popularity.

I think SOME owners love Bettman, but not all. The owners want more money, and using the Hawks as an example, why wouldn't they love McD more? He has a waiting list 5+ years long for the Hawks. An almost 99.5% renewal rate on season tickets going into the '10-'11 season. They had some of the highest ratings for sports here in the Chicago land area. He has merchandise flying off the shelves, and in most cases, shit is back ordered for months. All of which = big fucking money.

Why wouldn't 30 team owners want McD?

Personally I don't think it would be such an outlandish idea that McD takes over if it would happen that Bettman steps down. McD would for sure get a lot of consideration for the job.

And the Hawks didn't finish last in 2007.

That concern to me is not whether the owners like McD but the issues he as Commish

would bring to the GM's and players. You would see a huge divide between the owners and everyone else if this were to happen. McD is not respected amongst the GM's of the league and the same goes for the players who know him. The players union and the

league would be at odds with each other and with his personality he would burn any bridge of anyone who does not bow to him.

As much as I want him out of Chicago, I sure as hell do not want him running the league!

I don't understand the necessity of a thread for this BS....especially since this is NOT news. It's been mentioned several times in the past....and met with indifference.

He reminds me so much of the Count, so he'd make the perfect evil replacement. Hes got the knowledge of the sport, has the ugliness, is hated by most of his team's fanbase and the other team's execs.... and can market much better. I don't see why not. The only thing I don't see him being is a puppet, which the Board of Governors would want him to be.

Oh hell, I just want him to get away from the Hawks.
