well, Maholm was signed as a hopeful for a decent spec return, and at the time even injured Viz was a good spec so it was a win in the aspect of why it was made, Baker... still not sure why he was brought in in the first place, Ian Stewart... we've gone over that trip already... Rizzo deal eh I'd lean towards the Cubs... if we didn't have Rizzo what would we have at 1B right now Bryan Lahair? Arms are easier to replace then a power position like 1B, plus the D. Gotta llve it, Wood deal for the Cubs is a win, numbers don't tell the story, Marshall was off loaded as a late inning specialist/possible closer for a left handed young arm that could be good, and Wood is progressing pretty well, so the Cubs are doing well for what they were looking for. the good listed were good, Jackson, bust but I doubt it's gonna be a bust the whole time.

Right now we have Fuji playing DL carousel, Camp over the hill, Marmol a turd and a miracle closing right now vs a sure thing. See above, retain Maholm Wood not needed. Retain Cashner the potential loss of Garza is lessened. No need to overspend on Jackson. Feldman has been ok as a #5. Villenueva is fine as a 6th man.

Think about it:

If they did what I wanted them to do:

Retain A-Ram, Sign Fielder and went after Cespedes vs Soler.

Rotation last year would have been:

Dempster, Garza, Shark, Maholm, Zambrano, Cashner (injured) (didn't get into the trade for Z for a loser)

This year:

Shark, Garza, Cashner, Maholm, Feldman Saved 13 mil on not signing Jax and could have used it towards retaining Garza or put into Fielder's salary.

LF: Sori, CF Dejesus, RF Cespedes, 3B A-Ram, SS Castro, 2B DJ (Barney sux), 1B Fielder, C Castillo

That team could fight for a play off spot for years.

Bottom like was they didn't want to get into a mega deal. So they went cheap and are tossing seasons away to get better picks and more allotment towards drafting and failing on to overseas market. Fuji is not young at all and has been injured.

Anyways I'm all about using the draft to build talent but not putting the minor league system ahead of the major league team.

With all the cash they invested into the front office you would figure they would be able to get quality players late round as Theo had to do in Bost. vs depending on high draft picks to rebuild....silly really.

There are your reading skills at its finest. Arms are very easy to acquire, the quality is the real question. Free Agency is packed full of both good decent and bad arms none the less there are far more to acquire then a power hitting first baseman.

The fact you feel that signing a #5 on a bottom cellar is a good thing brings up more questions.

1. You seem to think that trading ML quality pitchers for TJ cheaper projects are ok.
2. You feel that it is ok to back fill the rotation with fringe talent as long as they are used to flip more questionable crap.

Maholm would still be a bargain as a back of the rotation as would Feldman. Or they could replace with more easy to attain F/A's.

Again that was because of injuries and payroll issues. On top of it payroll was in the 145 mil range vs 120 mil range as I laid out being possible.

Also I never was one of the guys saying get rid of him. Even back then 3B was a premium spot in the league and even injured A-Ram was considered one of the best.

You are underselling Villanueva a bit. His defense is stellar and he projects to be a .260-.280 hitter with 15HR power. Also not ready to write off a 19 year old at A ball that has shown pretty good plate discipline. Geiger isn't a 3B as evident by his awful defensive metrics at the position.

Bad teams can not afford to place low producing players in premium hitting spots. Power at the corners D up the middle. Always some exceptions as you can go with a glove at a corner when one of the middle can do both. Produce and play D. Reason why I didn't agree with them tying up Castro and should have sold high. D sux and doesn't hit for power. Barney fits the D up the middle but the rest of the team is broken.

There are plenty of guys available in FA who put up league average numbers at 1b which is all Rizzo has done since joining the Cubs.

You have never said one bad thing about any minor league prospect and go on and on and on about how bad signing every quality proven major league player would be.

Out of curiosity, what do you all think the braintrust does w/ T.Wood and Feldman? I think we sell off Feldman, but may try to sign Wood to a 3-4 year deal. If we do want to extend Wood, I think negotiating before the end of the season would be a good idea...

I think Feldman probably gets dealt and the return will be less than people think it will be.

I think it would be a mistake to extend Wood right now because I still don't think this is the true Travis Wood. He doesn't strike out a lot of hitters and I also think it is very unlikely he can sustain his low number of hits allowed. He is allow almost 2 hits less per 9 innings than his career totals while striking out .5 less batters per 9 innings as well. Those numbers don't seem sustainable to be both striking out less hitters and allowing less hits. His BAbip number is about 40 under his career numbers. I will be surprised if he ends the seasons with an ERA under 3.5

On a really quality staff he should be about a #4 starter.
