This.
The fact you feel that signing a #5 on a bottom cellar is a good thing brings up more questions.
1. You seem to think that trading ML quality pitchers for TJ cheaper projects are ok.
2. You feel that it is ok to back fill the rotation with fringe talent as long as they are used to flip more questionable crap.
...........:bizarro:................................
Funny thing is:
Fielder:........12-13:$23M annually. 14-20:$24M annually
A Ram:........12:$6M, 13:$10M, 14:$16M, 15: mutual option ($4M buyout)
Cespedes:....12:$6.5M, 13:$8.5M, 14:$10.5M, 15:$10.5M
Maholm........12:$4.25M, 13:$6.5M club option ($0.5M buyout)
Marshall:........................13:$4.5M, 14:$5.5M, 15:$6.5M
Cashner:.................1 year/$0.5008M (2013) (Arb 1 next year)
LaMahieu.................min deal say .500M
2013: 53.5 mil here.
Add the rest:
Sori: 18 Mil
Garza: 10.25M
Marmol: 9.8M
Feldman: 6 M
Castro: 5M
Villanueva: 5M
Dejesus: 4.25M
Shark 2.64M
Navarro: 1.75M
Russell: 1.075M
Gregg .500M
Barney: .562M
Castillo: .500M
4 more .500 bench/pen filler. 2 mil
66.252M
Total: 119.752M Just under a 120M payroll which is doable as they have done it.
Looking at 2014:
9.8 mil off the books from Marmol. Gregg is providing that anyways.
Garza coming up but do you want to spend big on a #3 now. Shark and Cashner would be the 1-2 going forward. Might be better to look into a LH starter top of the rotation. (Trade for Price ie cash some chips that the farm is developing)
Maholm would still be a bargain as a back of the rotation as would Feldman. Or they could replace with more easy to attain F/A's.
Looking at it they could have done a better job and been in competition for a play off spot every year with out getting into 150 mil payrolls.
