A lot of people don't like progressive music.
Personally, I love it, and love Pink Floyd. I saw them live twice, and those were the two most amazing concerts I have ever experienced by a long shot.

I like plenty of progressive music -- king crimson and robert fripp's other projects, for example -- but I don't categorically like all of any genre

If that is the case, then something is wrong. Floyd has such a huge spectrum of music. You can dislike 80% of all their music, but it would be amazing to say you dislike 100% of it.
The same goes for anyone that says they like 90-100% of Floyd. Maybe appreciate 100% of it, but actually like? Yeah, I call bullshit on that.

bullshit on what? I haven't done a case study and listened to their whole catalogue. when did I say I hate 100% of their music? my point was that just because I don't like pink floyd, it doesn't mean I am some philistine who dislikes progressive music.

this reminds me of when I used to take friends to ariel pink live shows and they wouldn't speak to me for weeks aftewards. he's better enjoyed as a recording artist, though

I did. and pointed out I have not listened to 100% of it. (Why would I listen to 100% of a band that gave me a bad general impression? do you do that? I listen to music for enjoyment, not as a science.) so I don't know why you brought that up in the first place.
