Are ones not sports fan of a certain team because of the area they are born?
Not necessarily, but mostly, yes. The choice is still arbitrary compared to one's nationality.

You're comparing America to shitty totalitarian, theocratic or other third world countries. The same kinds of freedoms and ideals you embrace in the US are enjoyed by many, many other countries too.
When you say "any" other country in your opening sentence, you make it sound like you believe that the world consists of America (freedom) and everywhere else (not freedom), which is why so many people from other free countries mock the severely insular attitudes of some Americans.
Think you're reading into things a bit much there.
White Knight gotta White Knight.
If you see someone burning the Flag dont let it bother you, its because this country is great that they have the freedom to burn the flag without being jailled or stoned.
We drifted pretty far from what this country was founded on. Having said that I respect it and it pisses me off to see it trampled or burned. It still represents our freedom and how far we have come as a nation (despite how fucked up that may be some times).
Well no shit. Your country was founded when idealisms, technology, culture and global communication were completely different than it is now. There was also like 60 people occupying the USA at the time and 59 of them were aboriginals.
Like fitting a round peg in a square hole sometimes.
I know the West Indies are called that because the European explorers though they had found a path to India. Did they also think, when they arrived on what today is known as the continental USA, that they had arrived in Australia, like in a time machine boat, ...or something like that?
My very first memory as a kid crossing the boarder were your highway signs. Some dudes head was all over the fucking place. I was like " whos this dude he must be important to have his head all over highways signs..he must be a dictator".
I take it you crossed the Peace Bridge int WA state?
Hahahaha many many times. I do love wa state though. Great state.
