Ok, so it's not league-wide, but its wide spread. I know of at least 4 other teams that have the tradition, 2 of them original six.
Regardless, some logos demand respect, some don't. I'm a Blackhawks, White Sox and Packers fan. The Sox logo doesn't hold nearly the same value, to me, that the Hawks and Packers logos do. Most of that is based on history and tradition. While some might not take any stock in that line of thought, I certainly do.
Now, I'm going to go play some golf.

The Blackhawks were the Black Hawks which was a military regiment. Maple Leafs are the same way.
Which is why it's a more respected logo. Also, Detroit sucks and nobody cares about a winged wheel or whatever the fuck a "red wing" is.
