Most coaches fail whether they were interim, 1st time or retreads. So overall success rate is going to be low regardless of your route to HC. However in the interim group you have.

1. Jeff Fisher coaching 16 years and falling 1 yard short of a potential SB win.

2. Fontes coached the Lions to 4 playoff berths.

3. Garrett went to 3 playoffs appearences.

4. Marvy Levy - 4 Super Bowl appearences.

5. Mary S had several playoff appearences with Browns

Marv Levy wasn't an interim coach. He wasn't on the Bills coaching staff. He was hired as Head Coach with a multi-year contract.

He replaced Hank Bullough midway through the 1986 season. Finished 2-5 that year. So fits premise of replacing a coach midseason and remaining coach the following year and beyond.

Outside of Garrett, who wasted several very talented Cowboys teams, are from long ago eras that don’t exist in your nfl anymore.

Again small sample size as nit a lot of iHC that became HCs recently.

It ultimately is a non issue as again mosy coaches fail so if you looked a t any category of coaches ie IHC, first time, retreads you would find a **** ton more failures than successes.

But he wasn't an interim coach. So Levy is not an example of an interim coach succeeding.

Art Shell. Was named interim HC in '89,after 4 games and finished 7-5. Went on to have a decent to good HC career.

Are there any examples of the Bears firing a coach mid season?

Disagree he joined at an interim period and not at the end of the season.
There is nothing to agree/disagree with. Levy was not an interim coach. I don't think you understand the term. An interim coach is the guy who is keeping the seat warm until the full-time coach is hired. That's why interim coaches are pulled from the existing coaching staff (only one interim coach in history was not part of the existing staff).

Levy was not part of the Bills coaching staff and was hired to be the full-time coach.

Bruce Arians took over a team that was 2-3 (with losses o a 2-14 Jags team and a blowout loss to a 6-10 Jets team) and finished 11-5.

Arians was 80-48-1 with 4 playoff appearances and one ring. Outside of the fact that he was 60 when he took over - this is the best comp.

It can also be used to refer to a coach hired in the middle of a season. Hence why Levy is included on this list interim coaches.

So again agree to disagree.

Yes but he left the Colts. He didn’t stay with them.

No, that's wrong. Sorry that "Yardbarker" needs a fact-checker. Levy was not an interim coach.

One of the interesting quirks of Dan Campbell was that he was never actually an OC before before becoming a HC. He is one of the very few to have not been any sort of coordinator first. Off the top of my head, the only other ones that really stand out to me that went straight from a position coach/asst HC to HC were Andy Reid and Jim Harbaugh.

You could say it was a very ballsy move by the Lions and it worked out.

McVay…ballsy move

KOC….ballsy move

I don’t want a safe hire. I want the best hire. Unfortunately, I’m skeptical the bears could identify that guy…but they might have him in their building. Pretty sure Brown will get an interview no matter what, but if he goes 3-2 or better and they look well coached/no coaching blunders etc., it’ll be very interesting. Especially if Caleb and the players are all in on him.

I think the ballsy part isn't necessarily the hire, but how the Lions/Rams/Vikes gave total control of the operation over to the new head coach. They allowed an inexperienced HC to put their stamp on the organization and have a major say in how personnel is handled.

The Bears are always the opposite. They have idiots like Ted Phillips and Kevin Warren trying to justify their position, the GM is always flexing their authority over the HC. The Bears have yet to figure out that the HC has to be the one in charge, not some front office schmuck.

I disagree. Between Flus, a defensive HC and Poles preaching Trenches 1st it's obvious that the HC was the one in charge and it failed.

I'm not saying the HC gets nothing they want but the GM is the final say in player personnel. Nobody is complete dictator unless it's the rare HC/GM person.

I don't remember enough about Angelo to know if it was against what he said but obviously the love for drafting LBs had something to do with Lovie. It should be a rational GM's job to say "No, you have enough LBs or DBs. We need offense too."

You’re not wrong on the latter but they were still ballsy as **** hires.

Campbell was never even a coordinator before

McVay was 30 lol

KOC didn’t call plays with the Rams and was only OC there for 1 season.

These are gigantic balls hires that were scrutinized by a lot of people.

A lot of guys in that list shared earlier in this thread don't actually fit the bill as an interim coach who went on to long-term success with the team they became an interim for.

It's honestly not a good list when you follow the actual criteria. The top three guys that pop up in my head are Jeff Fisher, Jason Garrett, and Marty Schottenheimer, only one of which I'm sure anyone would think was a legitimately good coach, let alone great.

If you're making a list of the 3-4 top HC candidates right now, Thomas Brown isn't on it. That absolutely could change if the offense looks great the last 5 weeks and Caleb Williams continues to make noticeable improvements. But let's also acknowledge current reality.
