I'm no fan of Kessel, but that reporter was an asshat to ask that question IMO.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
It's reasons like that that prove blood is not much thicker than water.

Sucks for Johnson and is one painful lesson, but I would cut them out of my life--permanently.

It's like Jack Johnson is cursed to always be stuck in the negative

Pretty good game on NBC right now. NYR 2 - Pit 1 towards the end of the first. Nice little warm up to the Blackhawks game later tonight.

What is the real point of doing this though? I mean I love the Olympics and how it's a great change of pace but I still don't think it had the intensity of a good NHL playoff rivalry, and with this being in the offseason instead of in season, what do they really hope to generate out of this? Especially at the under 23 age. I'm not saying it's a bad idea or that I won't watch, just curious as to what is actually motivating this other than the obvious money grab

Pretty interested to see what happens with him. There isn't much of a cap savings at all by having him in the AHL after you factor that LA will have to replace him with someone - so I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay with LA after all is said and done. I don't believe he gets claimed (probably what LA is hoping will happen) but it could happen if there is a team hoping that he can rebuild his stock over the next month by playing top 6 on a seller. My guess is that Richards is a guy that any team would like...but not at his cap hit. Unfortunate for him.

I agree. Seems like it's a bit of a wake up call for him that he needs to figure his game out. Though, is there anymore reentry waivers where a team can claim him for half his cap hit?

They got rid of Re-entry waivers with the last CBA. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings call Richards back up right after he clears - though they may give him some time down there as well. Supposedly the Kings spoke with a few teams in Canada (Leafs, Flames, Jets) about Richards, but didn't like any of the trade scenarios. My guess is that any scenario would involve the Kings eating half the cap hit or taking a large cap hit back.

Please nobody up there give the Kings a break and take most of that contract.

I'm still surprised at what happened to Richards, was it too much of a little guy playing a physical defensive all around game that took him down quickly? Or getting battered around more long western conference playoff serieses?

He dropped off after the concussion last year. Before that concussion he had 20 points in 25 games. Since then he has 29 points in 97 games...

I don't think time in the AHL is what he needs. I think he needs time off and he may need to take another approach to how he plays. He has always been a guy that played physical and went to the hard areas. It's possible he's not willing to do that anymore because of the concussion concerns and concerns for his future health. It's also possible that all of the shoulder injuries and concussions have caught up to him and he will never get back to where he was.
