Obviously you forgot! We've already had the whole convo re the cello being my favorite instrument followed by the rest of the strings and your playing cello growing up. #MemoryFAIL Samesies.
<
I listen to and am a fan of a lot of music but I would go to my grave defending my argument that Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello are the MOST perfect piece of music ever conceived by man, heh. You know the funny thing about growing up here and all the CSO acclaim and notoriety, all the excellence, all the CSO Grammys, etc. is that the cruel irony is that I am not particularly a fan of the modern full symphonic sound and even worse tend not to be a huge fan of the type of symphonic repetoire that is the CSO's specialty, LOLOL. I likely should have been raised in a town like Salzburg or Vienna, heh. And yes, I also adore choral/sacred (all those gorgeous "Stabat Maters" and "Requiems" with their "Agnes Deis"and all those "Missa Solemnis"!) and ancient music too and also period intrumentation specialty ensembles. It's ALL good! I can read magazines, online content, arty/coffee table type books, comics etc. with any genre of music playing but when it comes to reading my book of the moment it's GOTS to be silence or Classical---that's it, period.

Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello - exquisite.

Right now I am really enjoying Beethoven's 7th. For classical choral & personal sentimental value, I love the Liebeslieder Waltzes by Brahms. I sang for a good part of my life though, so if I start naming classical & choral works that I love, it will need its own thread. Bela Bartok is always interesting. Thanks to SAMESIES I am listening to the Bach right now.

Heh heh. We are both feeling Ludwig these days then. Last night while reading my awesome Colm Toibin book I was playing Symphony No, 3 "Eroica" from one of my most beloved boxed sets, Beethoven: The Symphonies performed by The Academy of Ancient Music with Christopher Hogwood conducting. <--- This BTW, is one of my MOST favorite performer-conductor pairings---love, love, LOVE them!

No. **** you.

Better than most what exactly? Other formerly classically trained cellists who no longer perform in the Classical genre and and instead perform Metallica and other Rock covers? Well when parsed that way into an uber-niche I guess. . .but I also suspect that in that case the guys from 2Cellos might give them a run for their money.

First, Apocalyptica has come some distance from just performing covers... they've been doing mostly original stuff since 2003 (on a personal note, I love the song they do with Corey Taylor of Slipnot/Stone Sour, "I'm Not Jesus")

Second, the thing that annoys me about some fans of Classical music is the elitist attitude they cop when it comes to anything that isn't Classical music. Groups like Apocalyptica, bond and the Kronos Quartet have done wonders to bring a "Classical" sound to modern music with the potential of pulling in new fans who may want to explore more of the roots. Admittedly, it might be a small group - but still, to dismiss them outright is pretty close-minded, in my opinion.

I have huge respect for anyone that is classically trained on an instrument and uses that base to reach out into other genres to explore - whether successfully or not. But you're right, it takes a lot to just play the same fucking pieces over and over without any innovation or creation to add to the world of music.

Stupid machines.

As for classicaly trained cellist playing other types of music, I recommend Takenobu. He's kind of like Andrew Bird, but with a cello and no whistling.

First of all, I am not obligated to like Apocalyptica as musical group period which is the only thing my first response of "Uggh" indicated. Because I don't care for their music and therefore have no use for them.

Secondly, I said nothing about any perceived virtues or shame of classicly-trained musicians plying their trade in altogether different or else Classical crossover genres---I simply noted that they exist hence my mentioning 2Cellos. And really, you have no idea if I or any other "Classical fans" out of hand dismiss musicians who have abandoned their Classical roots entirely or those who are striving to apply their Classical training in pushing the limits in forging a *new* type of Classical sensibility because hey, if you did you'd know I do in fact support artists like The Kronos Quartet and Philip Glass as examples. All of this isn't to say that I don't in fact dismiss a lot of Classical crossover or "Classical Lite" (and especially "Opera Lite") that I consider to be pablum but as with any type of musical genre there's good and there's bad artists which is de facto a personal and completely subjective parsing of one's own tastes, sensibilities, and opinions.

You wanna get on your "Everyman" soap box fine but don't be pointing your cyber finger at me based on what my actual posts stated.

Congrats, it appears you have completely miss my point altogether (which of course, with my rudimentary writing skills probably isn't hard to do)... that's why I made the comment. It irks me when fans of any genre posit that THEIR opinions regarding music are the correct ones whether ("Uggh") implied or directly stated. Music is far too subjective to place any value but personal to it... most sincere apologies if my interpretation of the above was construed as derision from you.

Besides, we're all just concerned that you stay happy in your tower looking down on all us plebes... you're far too good to put up with all of us. A thousand pardons, Ma'am.

Well this strikes me as disingenuous----personal opinions about shit after all is ALL that happens in the FYE threads and presumably what they exist for so I don't get the offense. My personal feeling is that if after Mass' original picture post I had responded with a, "**** Yeah" or "Love them!" the only response that would have elicited from you is that you like them and love "I'm Not Jesus". But that's neither here nor there conjecture. What I will say is that I've only ever noticed the snob or elitist finger or implication being leveled at female posters when they say they dislike or dismiss something---the takeaway being that they're just being snooty bitches. You're irked by people passing personal musical opinion as fact? Well it irks me seeing the few female posters this place actually has being faciley characterized as snobs when someone gets offended by their feelings about some TV series, book, film, music group, or what have you. Eh, I guess that makes us even-Stevens.

And no, I did not miss your original point and I won't concede that I did just because I said that there are "good and bad" in every genre of music becuase I clearly stated that this so-called "good and bad" dynamic are self-determined.

Also? Have a good Turkey Day turdling!

I may post a zillion pics soon of some of the things I have been working on so you can all laugh and be asshole critics or tell me how boring my shit is. I've been working on a lot of stuff since I last posted. And I mean a lot!! Anyone who knows me on FB knows how much shit I produce in a span of a week. It's actually a problem. I've become addicted to painting acrylic on glass. Which is a difficult practice as glass doesn't support paint as clean as other canvas. But it's fun and you can get some fun effects and textures from it.

Until then you may all discuss.....either why Canadian Abstract artists have never received proper exposure in the art community (because many deserve to be held as high as their American and European counterparts). Or you may discuss why I am so amazing.
