"...According to an NFL source, the Bears have $10.46 million in cap room after the restructure of Cutler and release of wide receiver Earl Bennett. The team is going to need space to sign the rookie class and ample room to operate during the season.
It is doubtful the Bears cleared the room last week in an effort to make a major signing this week or in the future because the goal in putting the automatic conversion clause in the contracts was to create a “use as you go” system for managing the salary cap.
Emery and contract negotiator Cliff Stein don’t want to “borrow” cap space if it isn’t going to be used. Theoretically, if the team was going to pursue a major free agent like defensive end Jared Allen, it could wait to create cap space needed to potentially sign him if and when that deal came together. In other words, Emery wouldn’t go creating cap space last week for a deal that wasn’t imminent.
Therefore, it is likely the cap maneuver was done to create space the Bears view as necessary for normal roster building and maintenance throughout the 2014 season. It’s possible “name” free agents could be in play for the team moving forward but Emery was pretty clear after the Houston signing that players will have to fit the salary structure the Bears have in mind. As the market settles, it will be interesting to see what takes shape as the team has 67 players listed on the roster, a ways off from the maximum of 90...."
