What are the best and worst cities you have ever visited?

BEST

San Francisco, CA

There is so many things to do in this great city. Pier 39, Alcatraz, cable cars, Coit Tower etc. Not to mention a great nightlife scene. It is a easy city to get around. Most of the city feels safe. I would highly recommend visiting. Just stay out of Oakland.

WORST

Buffalo, NY

There is literally nothing to do in Buffalo except get robbed, get shot or go to Niagra Falls (which is almost 30 mins outside of Buffalo). There a plenty of crappy cities that at least have a nice downtown area but Buffalo doesn't even offer that. Terrible city with alot of creepy characters walking around.

What about you? I'm interested to hear from those who have visited many different cities.

Best: I also like San Francisco as my favorite.

Worst: Compton, CA. No, I've never stayed there, but I've driven through several times. The last time I was there, I saw a homeless crackhead lady dancing in the middle of the sidewalk. As I drove by, it turns out she was in front of a private Zumba class and was just outside their window and following along with the class. Free classes for her.

I live in the Bay Area and cringe when I have to go into the city. The homeless in SF have more pull than a tourist and they are everywhere. Crapping in the street and hassling people for a handout to the point they scare people. Only city in the USA where the homeless get a check twice a month from the city. At least they used to. And Oakland is as bad as advertised....lol

Best city....Yorkville Ill..........cause I grew up there

Best-another vote for San Francisco even though I've spent a total of 2 days there

Worst-Rockford. I grew up NW of Rockford, it's an armpit.

Everyone I've talked to that's been to Philadelphia has nothing good to say about it. The history aspect is neat but the roads, people, food, and airport to name a few things are all just fucking awful according to people I know that have spent any significant time there. So I probably won't be going there, ever

ND is horrible.
Melbourne and Montreal are up there....I haven't been to S.F. since childhood, but from what I know, I probably would dig it outside the housing costs.

Peoria and Gary bringing up there rear.

The thing about Peoria is you have low expectations, but driving in it actually looks quite impressive relative to what you expect. Then you get there and realize there isn't shit there.....except poor white people and some desperate CAT employees counting the days till they can escape with a pension or transfer.

Gary you sort of know the deal going in and it doesn't disappoint. If I never played poker, I would have 0 interest in every going to NWestern Indiana, ever. What a complete pile of total shit that shithole is. Indiana is just horrific overall.....

Specific note on St. Louis...

As far as people, StL. people in general allow me to understand how Nazism triumphed in a free society; a lot of the whites in Stl. would be all for it if it happened here. Just nakedly xenophobic, racist, class conscious, automatons...Cincinnati is pretty similar I hear.

Having recently gone to Cincinnati, I can tell you they've really started to clean up the city. Parts of it as still as you described obviously, but a lot of gentrification coming through.

Brisbane. Everyone is friendly, the sights are gorgeous, the geographical features have a bit of everything, including some of the best beaches I have ever seen within a short drive. The food is great, the sights are pleasing, the locals are hungry to continuously improve the area in different ways without a massive fight over ideals. My #1, right now at least, and I've been all over the place, including every place listed in the thread so far. IMO, Brisbane is one of the best kept secrets on travel lists. US only: Santa Fe.

Paris. Just an absolute nightmare. Every time I go, it's worse. The first day you go to Paris, it's exciting and interesting because of all of the old stuff to see. Then you find out fast, the lines are super long to get into anything worthwhile, the place is a toilet and smells like one. At least with shit holes like your Detroit's and Sao Paulo's of the world, you know what you are getting into and are completely warned beforehand(therefore, why in the world would you go in the first place?). The level of courtesy is non existent, and if you are courteous to the locals they somehow find ways to make you regret being kind. The food is nowhere near as good as it may have been in yesteryear, and yes, you have to pay out of the ass for anything decent. US only: Cleveland.

If you ever take a road trip to see the country, put Santa Fe on your list and see. Strange enough, a lot of travel sites and rankings have Santa Fe pretty high up in their list as well. But YMMV, as a lot of worldwide lists have New Orleans as the #1/2 for the US, which IMO is ... actually not a bad choice either, but I wouldn't put it so high in my list.

Alright, but that doesn't really answer my question... What about it makes it so great? What's there?

Having worked in Fanta Se, I would advise everyone not to go during tourist season when the texas and oklahoma trophy wives stampede into town to overpay for turquoise during Indian Market

The city itself is massively overpriced and overrated but the surrounding countryside cannot be beat

Food, folks, new culture, old culture, quality obscurity, value(do a lot with little). It feels like it's a lot bigger than it really is. Not crowded, and the locals are among the least judgmental of anywhere I have been. And city size has nothing to do with being judgmental, so I try to take things like that back with me. Where by contrast, Chicago, as much as I love my city, is one of the more judgmental places. A person could know one teensie weensie thing about you here, and base your entire personality off it for years.
