but with that said, teams in every sport make mistakes ALL the time with who they trade, who they sign ETC.

So basically we cant be negative about a FO because we arent the experts? really?

No, you can be negative all you want. And yeah, mistakes do get made. But the fact remains- people that actually know what's going on are the ones pulling the strings here.

Maybe Scotty likes Stalberg's compete level. Maybe Q sees one tiny aspect of Stalberg's game that he thinks fills a need on this team. Maybe Stan has been talking to a GM or two that have shown some interest in Stalberg and there could be a deal made somewhere down the road.

These guys see Stalberg play and practice day in and day out. They coach him, they watch film on him and they get feedback from scouts, coaches, teammates and other people in the organization as well as from around the league. These guys have so much more information available and they have the burden to not only plan for tomorrow, but to plan for a year from tomorrow.

You and I see Stalberg play in 82+ games. We get his stat sheet and the occasional press piece where Pierre Lebrun says Stalberg doesn't score enough. That's about it. And all those guys in the front office? They get all this stuff too.

Again, you can be as negative as you want. But when it comes to a 4th line player that's getting paid jack shit for a measly 2 years on a team that has plenty of cap space- it just comes off as a glorious waste of energy, especially when you consider all I said above.

Softberg is a Swedish version of Tony Salmelainen.

I dont see the hate. He signed at a good price and its a high reward low risk. If he does well he plays, if he sucks he sits, not that hard. I hope Stalberg gets a shot in the top 6 but i'm fine with him in the bottom 6 to as towards the end of the year he elevated his game to be a bit more physical. I'd like to see a bit more net presence from him this year.
Agree...the low cap hit is the key..if he performs, great we got a guy who can play for cheap, if not...see ya
A cheap, short contract for a guy that has some speed and some size and the potential to produce in shoot outs (if Q would ever stop sending Sharp).

Nothing to get pissed off about.
One thing I hate about Q...Sharp in SO needs to stop
Well, the thought goes- if every loud mouth fan who complained about front office moves actually knew what they were talking about, they would be the ones in the front office.
Exactly.
Joe.. feel free to lace up the skates and get out there any time you like - I bet he could make you look like a pretzel and be playing right handed..

until that time, feel free to be put into context. Again.

he could probably make us all look bad...except maybe that kid that was on here who claimed to be a hockey player...forgot his name

4th line is fine.

when people start saying top 6, than there is a problem.

If he is going to play on the 4th line, i really wouldnt waste time pissing and moaning over this at all, but we do know that Q likes to **** with the lines ALOT. So with that said, im nervous to see what will happen.

 he is not a top 6 guy. you talk about how young he is (25) (26) in JAN, but at what age do you give up on him? 40? im curious on where you guys see how he can be a factor, when he has done nothing his whole career.

Sure the price is cheap, still a waste of money.

I never said anything about him being young, how ever this is the year he needs to start producing. (2nd full season) The guy playedbottom 6 minutes and put up 24 points. Other teams 4th line usually see 5-15 points.

:yep:

so with an improved 4th line (if thats where he plays) we should see increased production...if not, hello Europe

4th line is for checking.

My point about expertise is that imo a certain degree of it is required in order to have a knowledgable complaint. In this case, understanding what sucks at hockey actually is - and, imo, I have known quite a few young kids who thought they were slick on a rink, who -frankly, weren't... most of which couldn't even work out what their position -as they thought they knew more than their coach. So playi9ng it alone isn't really a pre-requisite... sometimes that ends up being a red herring.

I've been on teams where little wet behind the ears high school hot shots think that hockey positional defense = everyone chasing the puck.... it isn't.

But- well, whatever -really.

The team has a cheap role player - and it isn't really terribly exciting one way or the other - the depth chart is such that if someone outperforms the guy -then they will be in the line up.

I'll take the Wings 4th line over ours.

Helm, Miller & Abdelkader >>> Fossil Mayers, Carcillo & Softberg/Scott.

While that is a pretty talented 4th line, remember what the 4th line is for. The 4th line is for the sandpaper type players, the guys who aren't afraid to go out the and spark/create some energy, stick up for a teammate, throw some weight around, they pretty much do the dirty work. Those guys for Detroit may do some of that, but I can tell you right now those guys dont have an intimdation factor. If I can get a 4th line of Stalbrg-Mayers-Carcillo I will take that line anyday. Those guys will go out and bust their asses, they may not put up points, but their presence will be known to the opponent.

Leave Stalberg on the 4th line and I think he'd put up solid numbers. He's got the speed to forecheck his ass off (it'd be nice if he used it more often), and he has the size to win board battles (again, should use it more often).

For 875k it's worth a shot. Top 6? Definitely not now, probably not ever. But he could chip in 10-15 goals on the 4th line ... and I'll take that from ANY one on the fourth line, especially for less than $1 million a year.

:yep:

With mayers out there also, we get a guy who can win FO's incase they are stuck out there after an icing or something
Abdelkatormushmushmush is so badass that he's going to play goal, too!
Whats his GAA? Thats the least flawed goalie stat right?

I suppose that this may be a news flash for some, but 4th lines don't win championships -rather it is team defence.

---As for the other...

Lookit, if you see stuff like this out there (from a comment from the Trib's site on this same news item).

Stalberg's contract is par value. He was a disappointment last year. Has great speed but not a force in the corners which is so necessary for a forward who wants to be on a line as the "3rd" member. It would be nice to see him do something similar to Brouwer who the Hawks shipped to the Caps. during the draft.

Ok, let's analyse this for a second -and let's do it from the perspective of a player -well, one who had some coaching...

1st off, speed has nothing to do with corners - apologies to those who disagree, but it is being able to move the other guy off the puck, being able to dig the puck out, and frankly- standing up and not getting knocked on your rear. Elbows (or discrete elbows, to be more specific), are what you do in corners... it is a tough place... and that is basically what a team's power forwards are for.

__

Another thing, I disagree with the 4th line = "energy line" euphemism - well partly, -it is , but only for teams that haven't put together a shut down defensive forward line. Basically, when the term "energy line" is used- it is going to be (imho) to describe a line of hacks who basically are there while the first 3 lines suck some wind on the bench getting ready for their next shift.

You can put together an "energy line" if you like, but more often than not, they are a waste of lineup slots. Just my opinion, of course - but I suppose it also speaks towards the point of what constitutes overall team depth.

However, too it was often common to put together a "line" of 3 specialty players - say 2 dedicated penalty killers and a goon - but that was the 80's - 4th lines these days are not really any better than then - and often time basically just mean that a teams' other 3 lines are not really that distinct... just imho, of course.

I don't really have a problem dressing a goon -as I don't think that 1 guy out of 12 forwards dressed game in and game out (or rather one role game in and game out), is that big of an overall impact. They haven't been in the past, and there is no reason to expect that such a role would be a mistake nowadays -much less a catastrophic mistake.

I also don't have a problem -not- skating 4 regular lines in a game --if anything you actually want your top 3 lines on the ice most of the game.

21 goals in 117 games, considering it's an 82 game season, is relatively close to a 20 goal season. Something like 13. He did nothing with us, so I'd wager he was on pace for 20 in 82 before coming here.

I'm not saying he's a world beater. I'm just saying he has shown the ability to put the biscuit in the basket and he's fast and for that tiny amount of money he's a good risk. We've got enough cap room that if he sucks it up through 40 games this year we just shed him.

He's worth a shot at that price.
