At 4 way stop, first car, then right turn has the right of way, and north-most has the right of way when everyone comes to a stop at the same time.

I've always wondered about that. I even asked a driving instructor that question and he gave me a BS answer about how it'll probably never happen and that the drivers would basically figure it out among themselves.

The general rule of thumb here is to never insist on the right of way.

I realize that it's almost a statistical impossibility that 4 cars would enter an intersection and hit each other at the exact same time, but I figured there had to be some sort of law to cover the possibility. North-most car works for me.

Now if the impossible situation happened at an intersection where the roads were all at 45 degree angles going NW to SE and SW to NE, then I think the world would just end.

I'd of given you the same answer. Expecting all four drivers to know what direction is north is (sadly) unrealistic.
