Brendan Smith Hit on Ben Smith - How Many Games?

Like any of those old farts were going to do ANYTHING in preseason... this should have been a situation like what happened last preseason with Phaneuf:

Someone needs to come off the bench and atone for that. Not that Scott or Carcillo would have anything to lose. Actually they would have everything to gain... respect of their teammates and respect of Hawks nation.

And then have Shanahan suspend them for 15 games into the season for leaving the bench? Isn't that was the suspension was for that guy creaming Duco?

Come on. Be realistic.

My point being that Q did not want to escalate the situation. Especially in a pre-season game.

I'm pretty sure Stalberg is gone for awhile. No one is talking about the KNEE TO KNEE! MCL possibly.

He could not even put a feather of weight on it as he skated off. Wonder if Shanny will look at that one as well...

Who cares... its Scott or Carcillo... both suck and both can hand out an ass whoopin.

The Wings are lucky that Shaw wasn't on the bench because he is the type of player to atone for an incident like this.

Funny thing is they never showed a replay of it. If you missed the original you never would have saw it. We all know Q tries to avoid that extra shit as often as possible. You saw how fast they ushered Smith off the ice.

The other smith wasnt sure which day it was.

I love the people who say they are "traditionalists". I just don't see how the AHL hack COULDN'T avoid that.

because then it fucks them up going INTO the season. It's preseason. You want EVERY NHL Ref looking to just penalize them in the future? Good for Q stopping that. There were no Red Wing regulars to **** up. They were all AHL, 3rd/4th liners. Big Whoop.

Think man.

No replay and plenty of people around me did not catch it until Stahlberg was limping off the ice. Too bad too as he was looking good through out the pre-season. And as my wife pointed out, no 'Hawks cute enough for her to want to come to games with Sharp and Stalhberg out.

I feel bad for that piece of shit Brendan Smith if he ever laces them up against the Hawks this year, that's for sure.

The new additions will definitely make him NEVER to want to play against the Hawks again.

**** that piece of shit.... I hope he's so injured and concussed he can't play against the Hawks this year.

Dirty POS.

grimson, with such an aggressive bias, im so glad you're not a pro player cuz you'd be a repeat offender hahah

RK is right, they didn't go after them much right after for revenge because they wouldve just looked bad too, getting tons of their own penalties. We won the game on the 5-minute and ensuing 2-man, plus, it is preseason; even more, they pretty much iced the Griffins much like we put out the IceHogs in Detroit.

be smart and calm while also defending yourself and keeping other teams in line against you... rather than simply going all out blitzkrieg anytime you're disrespected--you earn respect passively by not retaliating in too busch league of a manner.

The funny thing is the Detroit fans behind us just shut up. Perhaps since many in my section mentioned that the suspension was going to mean nothing for a player who was going to make the NHL, and sucks for the player who was going to. Oh and I am ok with being drenched in beer from the 300 level peeps that threw it over at said fans and sorta missed.

taking one for the team!! That a boy Biscuit

Wow, that was pretty brutal. That should be a pretty good suspension.

However, Ben has to know better than to try a move like that there... When you toe drag with a defender flying at you like that, the result isn't going to be good. Also, I'm not really sure Brendan Smith targeted his head. It looks like he's just going to step into him, and Ben toe drags, dips, and the point of contact changes from chest/shoulder, to face. Brendan does extend his shoulder out, and follows through with the elbow though. That's going to be a tough one for Shanny to judge. Intent is very difficult to judge in that situation, because Ben changes position so quickly.

Get well soon Ben.....

Ben was pretty upright through the sequence. It is not like he put his head into a position expecting a high hit. At the 2 sec mark of the video Brendan made a strong move for the open ice hit and at the 4 sec mark Brendan has his arms and stick up pretty high when he makes contact. Regardless of if Ben was going to make the toe drag, Brendan was going to hit him and hit him high.

This is the stuff that the league is trying to reduce. Had Branden had the mind to play the puck or force Ben wide, the result most likely would have been different. And really the vast majority of defensemen do just that so they do not put themselves out of position. Which is what would have happened to Brendan if Ben got around him.

I think the entire philosophy about players having a history or not is another thing that Shanny will be changing. I think it's more of a no tolerance deal now and that behavioral history stuff isn't going to hold as much water anymore. And this is probably for the better.

Yeah that has to be looked at and also the severity of the injury of the player who endured the hit in regards to the severity of the discipline to the offending player definitely has to be thrown out, if that plays anything at all into the decision. That shouldn't matter at all, not at all. Just because someone may get lucky and not get say, a concussion, or a broken nose or whatever from a dirty hit shouldn't lessen the penalty for the offender. Like if Ben Smith somehow doesn't have a concussion or really anything wrong with him from this hit, that shouldn't mean the penalty is any less severe for Braden Smith. That's bullshit logic. He may not have gotten hurt from the hit, but the fucking guy still tried to take his head off. 4 or 5 games still seems way too low for this, first time or not.

Well, it looks as if these kids just don't get it. Also, reading the deadwing fans remarks about it, talk about seeing this hit through rose colored glasses. Babcock and the rest of the piece of shit fan fucks can go take a flying **** for all I care. It was an intentional hit to injure.

That was pathetic too. I was screaming at the T.V. because no penalty was called.

What really aggravated me was Pat and Eddie didn't even see the play because they were babbling and giggling.

It took until part-way through the next period that they said "I don't see Stalberg on the bench".

Pay, the ****, attention when the puck is in play. Still preseason and Eddies stupid jokes already piss me off. /rant

"Both referees said it's a classic example of what we're talking about, that's the illegal hit," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "It was pretty black and white. I'm not happy about it."

Detroit coach Mike Babcock tried to defend his player.

"He knows it's against the rules to hit the guy in the head, but he wasn't trying to hit the guy in the head. He was trying to make a body contact, and he would have made body contact but the guy did this [deked], and left his head there," Babcock said. "I watched [the replay] many times. What's the onus on the player with the puck?"

The refs saw it that way too TVL:

I was thinking these AHL hopefuls getting suspended could actually really hurt the NHL club. Could make them choose a replacement player they wouldn't have over the suspended player or if they keep him on the NHL roster to serve the suspension, could eliminate a roster spot for a player they wanted to keep.

I'll be interested to see how teams handle this type of thing.

**** Ben Smith for being so short that he's the perfect height for elbows to the head.

I think any amount of NHL games he's suspended could be huge for this guy. It could be the difference of getting called up or not later in the year. He's not going to be called up to serve a suspension.

**** i just had a feeling there would be injuries at this game. fucking knew it. just adding to my hatred of wings and their fans. 20 different assholes had to rub it in my face last night too. the big hit is all fun and games until it happens to someone on your favorite squad.

If anyone finds a vid of stalbergs injury post it up, i haven't seen it. or at least does anyone know when it happened, think i still have the game on DVR.

fucking babcock also was complaining about the rosters we iced. are you kidding me? who does that. *****.

The bigger point is that the defender does not need to take the body there to make a hockey move that cancels out our Smith's toe drag attempt. If he didn't suck, their Smith would have turned 180 and squared off in front of our Smith, while placing his stick on the puck or our Smith's stick to stop his progress and possibly reverse possession.

It isn't always about making the big hit. How many times have you seen Duncan Keith choose to take the body over taking the puck? It almost never happens because he knows the right play to make.

What if their Smith had missed the hit? Then his goalie would have been all alone to face the shot and probably would have gotten beat considering our Smith has hands.
