CPU not GPU? That gets a bit more complicated. Were on the eve of Windows 10 and DirectX 12 with true multi-threading which is going to favor multi-core CPUs. So the old advice of a 4-core CPU being more than enough for gaming is about to get smashed to pieces. DX12 performance will scale very well up to 6 physical cores and past that its pumping out diminishing returns. The thing is though that as you said you're a 1080p gamer so in reality these 6-core processors are overkill for you unless you also like to run other apps while gaming like recording video or Twitch etc. etc. These CPUs with more cores using true multi-threading are also going to vastly reduce bottlenecks on CPUs in CPU bound games like real-time strategy games and MMORPGs.

So really my advice with CPUs is wait and see how the landscape shapes out with DX12 / Windows 10 gaming. Or if you're just obviously going for a budget processor then how much is your price range?

well, for example the new 280x can be had for around the same price as the new 380. they trade blows in benchmarks with the 280x seeming to be the stronger card technically, but with such a small performance gap over the 380(when there is one) wont the 380 take the lead with better optimization going forward?

And then, what about a used 780? thats technically a better card than either, but is getting rather long in the tooth. And it doesnt seem as if nvidia is very good when it comes to supporting their older hardware.

I would steer toward a 970 over a 780 just due to drivers. The 780 should be a superior card but the 970 has been performing better in new games that have tesselation or gameworks.

Also, the 390 is a very intriguing card atm. It seems to be performing on par with the 970 at bit cheaper price which puts it in the best performance per dollar category. Buuut it comes with 8 gb gddr5 which games might actually start using in the near future. Its pretty enticing.

shouldnt 10 help current multi-threading cpu's?

oops... I meant gpu. I have been back and forth on the whole cpu thing, one minute thinking amd is the way to go since I could get an 8 core and decent mobo for less than a i5 set up, but on the other hand Im not to keen on buying into a platform going on half a decade old. An I5 4590 has been what Ive been leaning towards recently, but dont want to find that suddenly 4 cores doesnt cut it. though if dx12 does what its supposed to do 4 core cpus should get a performance bump as well. Ive actually seen some bench marks showing that dx12 lessens the cpu load so much that theres no benefit to having more than 4 cores when it comes to gaming. Plus even with dx12 spreading the load over all 8 cores of an fx, does it really matter if each core of the four core i5 is still executing tasks twice as fast? at this point its all speculation and best case scenario testing though so who knows? like you mentioned, im going to wait a bit and see what happens.

And bot, the 390 would likely be my choice but its a bit too expensive. Since the 970 has been out for a while used ones can be had for a pretty good price if you wait for the right deal. If I go with a new card it would likely be the 380.

That is exactly what I said. DX12 is going to be able to handle entirely unique/different threads at the same time instead of using software to load balance a single thread across all cores. Its literally night and day performance and it also shows you just how in bed Microsoft was with Intel to keep AMD's processors from being competitive all due to Intel's single threaded performance lead.

Just a FYI.

The typhoon hitting Taiwan and China are going to impact some part of the hardware industry. Probably the worst possibly typhoon trajectory for someone waiting on prices to drop.

Thanks for the heads up. Im going to wait awhile before building the rig anyway. Figured I might as well go with skylake, since theres really no reason not to, and Im going to wait until more cpus and mobos have hit the market. plus budget has increased a bit from the original 400-450. I still believe you can build a solid rig for that amount, but its looking like an i5 6500(or 6600) r9 390 pairing is going to be the way to go in terms of best bang for your buck.

MT is making me want to drain my Newegg Preferred account and build a new rig lol

Mine is a couple years old and still runs everything at max except the new Witcher game.
