The Bulls situation is a little unique because of what happened with Krause and Phil. It's one thing if the golden era ends on its own. We all knew it had to end some time. But it's quite another thing to force the fans to choose between Phil and Krause. When I say choose between Phil and Krause, I'm not talking about becoming Lakers fans. I'm actually referring to Bulls fans not accepting Krause out of resentment. To a lot of people, Jordan, Pippen, and Phil were the Bulls far more than Krause. I think a lot of people took a hiatus (but they didn't follow other teams) during this time for various reasons and many of those reasons go back to Krause and it's not even so much that the team became really bad after being so great for so long.

Yes that situation was very different than most teams falling off. I understand the resentment. I understood it then. I couldn't bring myself to leave the team because I was mad at management. I supported the players, not the office. I felt just like everyone else did about the dynasty ending the way it did.

A lot of those fans hopped on the Lakers bandwagon. That's part of the reason why I hate the Lakers now. People wanted to make kobe the next Jordan and wanted to stick around with Phil, but I wouldn't jump ship. I rooted against the Lakers hard. I supported the Blazers (in support of Pippen and Wallace) and the Kings because they were their main competition. I was still supporting the Bulls and watching the games, even when Ron Mercer was on the team.

I saw so many Lakers jerseys around Chicago, it made me sick. Now all of those same bandwagon Lakers fan are once again Bulls fans. And that's who I'm talking about.

Are you sure they were really supporting the Lakers or were they supporting Phil in some passive aggressive way (since many probably view(ed) him as a real Bull)?

I never said they had to. I'm just saying, I never left. What I don't respect is a person who is all on the team's nuts while they are winning, but then acts like he never was a fan when they aren't.

I've had people tell me they were more Jordan fans than Bulls fans. And these were people from Chicago. Conversations end for me right there. I identify with the Bulls because they work hard and rep my City. People that completely bail on the team and only come back when it looks like might win it all again just piss me off. Of course they don't have to watch all 82 games every season, but to say that they only watch when they are winning just doesn't sit well with me.

To me, you gotta go through the bad in order to really appreciate the good and be able to reflect on the dark times. But I guess I'm the only one that feels that way. Sox, Bulls, Bears are who I root for passionately. I have players in each sport that I follow closely, but I'm not a fan of their team at all.

Jordan may have been the greatest athlete of the 20th century. I can't blame a casual fan for being a Jordan fan and following the Bulls because of Jordan. He brought fans to the sport...you don't respect that? I loved watching Bo Jackson play football. He was fantastic. Not a Raiders fan...what is wrong with that?

However, in 2003, Krause retired as GM. The official explanation involved obesity related health problems. The Bulls fell to 23-59 in the next season, and Krause's dream of a talented young athletic team imploded with all of his draft picks and signings traded or out of the league within three years, and all remnants of Krause were gone from the Bulls in 2006 when Chandler was traded away. Curry and Chandler have had success in the league, but perhaps have not lived up to the lofty expectations that Krause had. Meanwhile, former players Brand, Miller and Artest became All-Stars for their new teams.

BTW, I lifted this from wikipedia because I wanted to revisit the timelines.

In addition to trading Brand for another 18 year old center. He was already on thin ice with people for chasing off the golden era of all golden eras. And then he became one of those GMs that felt like he had to pre-emptively draft HS kids. On top of ending the golden era, this was another colossal failure.

Once Gar/Pax took over, they went with drafting more proven college players. Part of it was that there was a rule requiring them to wait a year out of HS. Correct me if Im wrong but they started doing this before that rule was in effect.

The truth is, GarPax have done a better job building than Krause did.

It's unfortunate that Reinsdorf made it all about having faith in Krause.

Reinsdorf bought the Bulls at just the right time in 1985 and placed Krause there, who was able to bring in pieces to put around MJ. The belief was that one player never made that much of a difference as far as record, and Krause wanted to prove to the world that he could do it without Michael Jordan, and Reinsdorf, running the Bulls as a business investment, took it because he knew he was going to still make a ton of money off Michael Jordan and that dynasty, all the while saving money in the process by having a few bad seasons while allowing Krause to do his work. The NBA lottery commission even helped out by awarding the Bulls with the No. 1 pick in 1999, one year removed from losing the dynasty team (You know, like how Cleveland luckily wins the lottery a year after losing LeBron James).

Krause honestly I felt wanted to do too much, and he seemed to only know how to build pieces, not staples of a team (Which is what he essentially did around Jordan). He also based his entire 2000 offseason on Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Eddie Jones, and Tim Thomas. Realistically everyone knew Duncan and Grant Hill weren't going to sign with Chicago, so it was really about Tracy McGrady. In reality, its a good thing none of those guys ended up here as their careers went.

The high school kids was a dream of Krause of creating a Twin Towers situation like the Rockets in the mid-80's and the Spurs were at that time with Duncan and Robinson. It would become a dominant front court and rule the NBA in 3-4 years after they were drafted. That was also why Krause sacrificed Elton Brand, which to me is one of the worst trades in franchise history when looking back on it. Then trading Brad Miller and Ron Artest for Jalen Rose was the next dumb move, but lets be real here, none of these guys were ever going to lead us anywhere. Brand could have with a reliable PG, but the Bulls were pressed hard to find one at that point.

Paxson only drafted guys who had at least been in the Final Four with his lottery picks and even some later picks (Hinrich - Championship Game, Gordon - Champ, Deng - Final Four, Duhon - Final Four, Tyus Thomas - Final Four, Joakim Noah - Two-time Champ, Derrick Rose - Championship Game)

The rule that banned players fresh out of high school was instituted for the 2005 draft. The 2004 was the last draft to take on high schoolers, and the Bulls were already following the philosophy of not taking them at that point.

The problem with this is that 1) you don't know if either will be good and 2) you don't know when theyll be good. There is the possibility that you won't know if either is any good well into their contract or after. So there is a tremendous likelihood that you're letting them learn on the job only so they can go benefit someone else once their contract expires. It was incredibly dumb. They already had an established low post player in brand. Not hedging his bets was dumb.

Two things: they tried like crazy to get Dwyane Wade,...so they kind of had a clue as to how good he might be. Also, it's worth pointing out that Taj Gibson is the photo negative of Eddie Curry. He plays bigger even though he's only like 6'9". Not only that, but he is older than most of the players in his draft class.

And then one of the times when they chose youth over experience, they took Rose over Beasley. I'll also add that several people hated the Noah pick when they took him.

But getting back to the thesis that Krause sucked, it's really accentuated by the fact that Gar Pax have done really well...even with the luck of getting the #1 pick and taking Rose.

I'll agree with that. You also don't trade a 20/10 guy for an unproven high school player.

Yeah, they did try like crazy to get Wade. Wade was obviously most talented than Hinrich, but Wade met that requirement of having deep postseason experience as he led Marquette to the Final Four. So it would have met Paxson's requirement that he was going for at that time of drafting so called winners. Had the Bulls gotten Wade would things have turned out differently? Most certainly. Miami wouldnt budge on any trade offer and I want to say we were talking to Toronto, but I dont remember what the offers were.

I wouldn't necessarily say they took youth over experience in Rose and Beasley, they were both freshmen and Beasley had a history of having an attitude issue. The only thing people knew Beasley could do was score a lot of points (Something he hasnt exactly accomplished in the NBA).

Nope, both only one year of college...and Rose is actually technically older (Rose is born in October of 1988, while Beasley is January of 1989.)

Yeah, I just looked it up. What threw me off was that Beasley bounced around to different schools. I also thought he was a soph out of KST.

I DON'T LIKE IT!!!

Sorry but I been here suffering for YEARS watching guys like Corey Benjamin, Rusty LaRue, Marcus Fizer, Kornell David just to name a few (it was so many years of just BAD PLAYERS), then when we had some pretty good players we either traded them or let him walk like Jamal Crawford walk, Trading Elton Brand and Ron Artest, overpaying Eddie Robinson and he came and did NOTHING for the Bulls, Curry and Chandler end up being Bust Players For Us which set the Franchise Back again, Krause with his FAILED MASTER PLANS and a bunch of other things REAL BULLS FANS had to suffer with over the years...

so now people want to show up and claim they are fans when things are better now?

FUK THEM ALL!!! If you did not stay with the Bulls after the Jordan Era then your not a fan, only excuse you have is if your extremely young and wasn't around during the Bulls Struggles...but then again California is the MECCA OF BANDWAGON FANS!

You guys have no idea how bad it sucks... For the past 6 years I have been going to watch the Bulls every time they come to Utah and last year was the worst for bandwagon fans ... In the Gordon days there was maybe 20 Bulls fans in the crowd ... People would always talk shit on me for liking the Bulls

Now it seems like people here are trading in their Lakers/Celtics gear for Bulls and Heat

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Nebraska Cornhuskers
  2. Villanova Wildcats
The Bulls have an enormous following. This goes back to the Jordan Era. But it seems like there have been more Bulls fans at the road games in California than there has been...at least for a long time. It seems like when the Bulls have been playing in Stales (specifically) the building has lit up more when the Bulls have done something positive.

Maybe Im wrong but it just seems like the Bulls fans have been more prevalent on this recent road trip.
Problem is, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing, that I'm willing to bet a majority of those fans are 'DRose' fans, and not necessarily a Bulls fan. For instance, I will be following Arron Afflalo closely this year, because I am a fan of his. That doesn't mean I would classify myself as a Nuggets fan.

In the Staples Center, there are probably more Laker fans than anything.

Its going to be the same thing as when Jordan was here. The Bulls had a lot of Jordan fans who abandoned the team after Jordan retired. There are now alot of D-Rose fans, who will abandon the team after D-Rose leaves or retires.

And I'll still be a Bulls fan.
