I heard there was a ton of talent in Aliu's game but he was also a headcase. Maybe he blew up somewhere and the Hawks wanted him out?

Downie was the headcase in the situation.

I think this works well for both teams. We get the space we need, they get Buf and Sopel and keep their high 1st rounder.

The guys on the Afternoon Saloon are saying that Buff wasn't aware he'd been traded. They broke the news to him on the air.

I have been looking into Jeremy Morin, from what I have gathered is he has really struggled in junior this year after being drafted 45th overall by Atlanta last year, he is a pure offensive winger and plays the point on powerplays and really struggles in his own zone.

Akim Aliu was one of our best prospects but his game is very similar to Kyle Beach and maybe they though he was expendable. What we do with the draft selections will make this trade, but in the end we needed cap space and all the players we traded are replaceable.

No doubt, but Aliu is no level-headed saint.

Hahahaa true but I'm sure Aliu wasn't innocent, either.

Early in the 2005–06 OHL season, Aliu was involved in an on-ice altercation with then teammate Steve Downie during a practice. Aliu and Downie fought during a practice that took place on September 28 after Downie hit Aliu with a vicious blindsiding crosscheck to the mouth, knocking out three of Aliu's teeth.[3] The incident stemmed from the then 16-year-old Aliu's refusal to take part in a hazing incident, which involved rookies being forced to stand naked in a cramped bus bathroom. The team suspended Downie for five games and Aliu for one. Following the incident, Downie was told to undergo professional counseling. Head coach Moe Mantha was suspended by the OHL and later fired by the team, and the team was fined $35,000 by the OHL.
That's not Aliu's fault, I'd do the same exact thing.

Still love Downie for this though.

Sopel hasn't received an official call as of yet either.

To those that are much more knowledgeable than I, how many more players do we have to trade away now?

Sharp and Versteeg? Just one? Neither? More?

I don't know -I think Aliu had a lot of chances to prove his issues in the juniors (not just the one hazing issue) weren't his fault -and he being another GM's pick - I suppose it looked like a significant risk of a locker room cancer and much better for it to be some one else's problem.

i'm not completely sure, but i think with just steeg gone, the hawks would be under the salary cap. but don't quote me on that.
