Let's change this about and go for something a little different. Sure adding another quality defenseman would be nice - but, really that has been the story the past few seasons (or adding multiple defensemen ... if you have to get technical).
But, what would take the pressure off of the defense? Not necessarily automatically a goalie, but maybe a defence-centric 4th line. I continually don't understand the Stalberg on the 4th line thing - as he isn't a defence guy. I never have bought the "energy line" euphemism, as all that is saying is - these guys don't really do anything - but can run into someone every now and then... you need more than that -- but I'm not talking goals and scoring; no - in fact it is much more about guys that can eliminate opposing chances - frankly there ought to be a line that can help out the defencemen -and that line is probably the 4th line. There are too many guys on the team that are too one dimensional in the same way (in other words -too offensive minded, at the expense of their defencive duties).
Oh, don't get me wrong, this role for a forward is not flashy at all, and stands to gain the limitless ire of fans who only see one sort of stat (I don't mean to be singling anyone out here - as this is much more of a general statement as opposed to anything else).
While I don't necessarily have a problem with Mayers, he also hasn't been this type of guy in the past, and Brunette? Well ok, no I don't think he is either - he ought to be stashed on the 3rd line. Frolik? Well, yeah I don't know if he has it either... If he doesn't work on the 3rd line -then I don't see where he fits in. Same with Stalberg, if he doesn't fit in on either of the top 2 lines, then he might fit in on the 3rd- but then there is a glut of guys that are in that sort of position.
The team is missing some solid defencive forwards to fill out one of the lower lines - and that is a big reason I think as to why you can see the defence scrambling -- not enough forward support. Fact is that the top 2 lines, unfortunately, have the team's top defencive forwards (Toews, Hossa, Sharp). . . and they can't be on the ice to both be a scoring threat and shut down threats at the same time.
The upside is that d guys are a lot cheaper to acquire ... the downside is - they are tougher to spot... I should add, that I think Dewey's observation that it isn't about potential ... that is actually right when talking in the context of a season and if a team has a shot at it all - it is about established record. You can't go out looking for guys with the potnetial to play shutdown d on forward, but have to look for guys that have. Also if you need these guys (if you are looking to bring a few guys in)- you might as well do it earlier than later -in order to get as much playing time in -in a new environment...
just my 2 cents.
