Essentially, if an injury requires a player to be out for a minimum of ten games or 24 calendar days, a team can place him on LTIR and use replacement(s) that can not exceed the injured player's salary and bonuses.

Edit: I imagine this was implied, but obviously the replacement(s) don't count against the cap...until the player returns (depending on what was used for replacement - which is why Leino was traded from Detroit to Philly for garbage when Franzen came back from LTIR).

Fun With Cap Geek: Constructing the Blackhawks Roster (Complete with Niemi)

Paint It Blackhawks presents:
Fun With Cap Geek: Constructing the Blackhawks Roster (Complete with Niemi)

It has been an eventful off-season in the roster move category for Stan Bowman, but there is still one loose end that needs to be tied up: the Antti Niemi situation. With the Finnish goaltender’s arbitration hearing scheduled for this coming Thursday, the challenge of getting him signed to a new contract has been a hot button issue for Hawks fans and team observers. If the team were to lose Mr. Niemi, most fans would likely hurtle over a precipice of despair over the continued loss of players they know. If they are able to keep him, it would serve as a morphine drip for fans, easing the pain of losing so many players.

The question of how they would keep Niemi is a complicated one.

Not only is Stalberg at center but Kane's at left wing for Brouwer to play right, nuuu. Seems probable though

ALthough to be honest Im not sure who the last wing and 2 scratched fwds will be...

Also I could see Kopy getting bumped down in favor of Skille...

I think we really could use another vet near the league min in the bottom 6...

Stormbolter... thoughts? Which hogs would fit in best in the 4th line wing/ reserve fwd roles?

It's totally a crap shoot there Grinder. Klink could really be a solid 4th line guy but I would honestly be pretty shocked if that happened (not upset mind you). The more I think about it, the more I think Evan Brophey could end up cracking the roster coming out of camp. The kid has some offensive ability and really cranked things up on the defensive side of things last season. He is a center but I think that a move to wing wouldn't really hurt his play.

My real guess would be Jeff Taffe, as he has over 100 games in the NHL and is a reasonable cap hit. My dark horse pick is Huge Jessiman. Dude is another big body and has scoring ability. His D might be an issue though as that is what I believe has kept him out of the NHL after being a first round pick.

If it's just from me TBO, take it with a grain of salt, I think I might be a bit over optimistic :)
