Exactly rice. I have no problem with trying to bunt for hits. I have a problem with giving up outs.
Just saw the play.... what a great play by Reed.

Moneyball!
"Moneyball" is the use of advanced analysis to examine and exploit market inefficiencies. In the A's case it was OBP. Now that everyone realizes how important on-base skills are, teams have to find another inefficiency to exploit.
I just meant the part in the movie where Billy tells them never to bunt and if a team bunts get the ball and throw it to first and take the out...
That was in the book too. There's obviously times in the game where it is acceptable to bunt, but when you autobunt in obvious situations...that's when we get angry
I have to read that book, but college is only a month a way and I ll be reading all year... Is it at least an entertaining read?
I thought it was well-written. Sensationalized a bit, and obviously they had to omit a few details here and there, but I liked it.
I was just hoping that the author wouldn't throw a bunch of math formulas at me, I hate math... ity:

That's what Sevum said today. It was Reed's choice. It's a situational thing. I'm not a big fan of giving up outs, but... if you're in a tied game in the 9th with Campana on 2nd and no outs... and two hapless hitters coming up... it's time to bunt. However, this bunt didn't come in the 9th... and a big reason it worked was because it was a surprise move. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Johnson did that on his own rather than getting a call to do so.
The situation you described and the pitcher batting with runners on with less than 2 outs basically is the only times I want to see a sacrifice bunt. Drag bunts, squeeze bunts, and others I don't have such an issue with. It's a situational thing. Yeah, I got into it with someone on another forum's chat room once who was bitching about ARam not bunting Lee over during a game in the 3rd inning and a the other team leading 1-0. There was absolutely no reason for it at that time, and this was going on during the game. ARam wound up doubling, driving in Lee. So I piped up and said, "That's why you never have ARam bunt... he's the team's best run producer (at the time) and by far the best in the clutch (at he time). You don't take the bat out of the big boys' hands in those situations."
