Exactly rice. I have no problem with trying to bunt for hits. I have a problem with giving up outs.

Moneyball!

"Moneyball" is the use of advanced analysis to examine and exploit market inefficiencies. In the A's case it was OBP. Now that everyone realizes how important on-base skills are, teams have to find another inefficiency to exploit.

Well again we have to talk about this becaues Moneyball is such a vague term at this point. What the A's have done is using statistical analysis almost to the exclusion of scouting. As far as not giving up outs, that philosophy is pretty damn old actually. The guy most famous for that is Earl Weaver, but the Cubs to an extent were using that to an extent in the 60s as well (the piece on the Lou Brock trade on MLB Network talked about how the Cubs really limited when Brock could run for example).

I just meant the part in the movie where Billy tells them never to bunt and if a team bunts get the ball and throw it to first and take the out...

That was in the book too. There's obviously times in the game where it is acceptable to bunt, but when you autobunt in obvious situations...that's when we get angry

I thought it was well-written. Sensationalized a bit, and obviously they had to omit a few details here and there, but I liked it.

I was just hoping that the author wouldn't throw a bunch of math formulas at me, I hate math... :pity:

No math, but they did talk about how the A's evaluated players. Eventually the other GMs caught on so the A's lost their advantage.

It's a situational thing. I'm not a big fan of giving up outs, but... if you're in a tied game in the 9th with Campana on 2nd and no outs... and two hapless hitters coming up... it's time to bunt. However, this bunt didn't come in the 9th... and a big reason it worked was because it was a surprise move. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Johnson did that on his own rather than getting a call to do so.

That's what Sevum said today. It was Reed's choice.

And I agree with Dabs that I wouldn't want to build my team around bunting.

The situation you described and the pitcher batting with runners on with less than 2 outs basically is the only times I want to see a sacrifice bunt. Drag bunts, squeeze bunts, and others I don't have such an issue with.

Yeah, I got into it with someone on another forum's chat room once who was bitching about ARam not bunting Lee over during a game in the 3rd inning and a the other team leading 1-0. There was absolutely no reason for it at that time, and this was going on during the game. ARam wound up doubling, driving in Lee. So I piped up and said, "That's why you never have ARam bunt... he's the team's best run producer (at the time) and by far the best in the clutch (at he time). You don't take the bat out of the big boys' hands in those situations."

Were you talking to Don Baylor? I mean seriously people wanting to give up outs in the first half of a game is stupid.
