The issue is that Pace hasn't drafted well. He simply hasn't. It's not just him always throwing picks away. It's that a lot of the time, those trades haven't translated into good players. Him missing on top 10 picks 3 times is a killer because those are supposed to end up being your blue chip players. Kevin white wasnt even a contributor. At best Floyd was a run stopper with an occasional sack. You don't draft that as an edge rusher in the top 10. Trading the picks to get the #2 overall wasnt the problem. Drafting the wrong QB was.
Misses add up over time. Especially when they're high rounders. Then you start to overcompensate in FA and trades.
The Bears dont just have a depth problem. They've had a starting roster problem. They've had two bad tackles and a leaking interior. The TE issues have been well known outside of Grahams redzone production. The QB, obv.
Ryan Pace has found some really nice late round talent, which has led to some completely overrating his overall ability to draft. Im sorry but i've been saying it for years, the lack of blue chip players is alarming. Mack, Robinson, Hicks, Trevathan, Fuller. These are arguably the 5 best and most consistent players the Bears have had the past few years and not one of them is a Pace draft pick. Roquan is finally becoming one of those guys but they need more of that.
There are a couple positions that need to be great to really improve the rest of your team. 1 is obviously the QB. 2 is a dominant D lineman. 3 is a premier LT. We saw how the Bears looked in 2018 when the QB was playing decent(until week 11) and Mack was destroying OLs and getting to the QB early and often. Everything looks better.
The Bears need more consistent drafting and smarter spending if they want to see sustained success.
