Can we still give Christmas gifts, or have they been outlawed in favor of "Winter Holiday Gifts"?

Giftcards show you made an effort. Cash says "here I was too lazy to get you anything."

IMO Giftcards are worse than cash.... you made the effort of swinging by the gift card rack in the grocery store.... I would prefer cash from someone over a gift card I now have to find and use when I go to whatever place you got it for and deal with that annoying pay the difference thing when you get to the end of the gift card.

Cash or Gift Cards show a minimal amount of effort.... of that I agree lol.... My Dad gets me the same 50$ American Express gift card every year and I usually try to get him Bears or Hawks gear he needs..... lately lots of Hawks stuff cause he has very little. It does get annoying. Dude is retired.... he still gives zero fucks lol

At least you get an American Express gift card. For years I would get Best Buy gift cards, because that is the "thought" my family put into me being the computer guy. And you can't turn around and tell them, you know, Best-Buy kind of sucks. But now Amazon seems to be the new one for techies, and that's a lot better. But Amazon gift cards are probably the least amount of effort. LOL. At least when I give cash, I go to the bank and get the nicest looking crisp bills just for the purpose of gifting.

Also, to add to the whole giftcard thing.

I forgot, someone explained this to me a few years ago. Some people use checks because they aren't disciplined to use debit/credit cards. Or they use cash, because credit cards will ruin them. Everyone has their quirk with how they manage to save and budget to not run up major debts. Always a hole burning through their pocket kind of thing. Keeping cash around is the same for gifts, and if the gift cards are purchased, at least they spent the money(in their head).

This is a great idea for a thread. I usually just give books to everyone on my list but would love some additional ideas.

I bet you hand out apples on Halloween too.

Wow, that helps a lot. Thanks for that info. Re: career path, she's undecided, but digital art is definitely a possibility for her.

If she goes that route or not, a graphics tablet for a digital artist/designer/editor is still a great tool to have. If you get a model thats is lesser than say the create and your daughter loves it, she will want to upgrade really soon. If she loves the create, she will still want to upgrade at some point, but the create will be usable for years especially compared with some of the economical models.

While those Wacom economical models have flaws and limitations, they are still more superior to some cheap off brand tablet whos pen may require a battery and the response of the tablet may be fairly suspect too.

One of my friends is building a library, I bet she'd be thrilled if I picked up a first edition for her. Just because you cretins don't enjoy literature doesn't mean the rest of us have to follow suit.
