Coleman Shelton's listed at 6'5" 285lbs, most NFL centers are around 300lbs so Ryan Bates (6'4 302lb) at least fits that profile. Shelton is undersized and has been getting dominated. He should only be the backup, and should not be getting most of the reps with Caleb just because Nate Davis doesn't like practice.

If Ja'Tyre Carter, Bill Murray, or Jerome Carvin aren't better options to play right guard, why are they even on the roster?

This "Top 10" offensive line the Bears are supposed to have is basically the weakest group on the team at this point. Even more so than the Defensive line, which at least seems to have quality starters like Billings & Sweat, a reliable vet like Walker, plus encouraging young players like Dexter & Booker.

Get it together 🐻's
More of a GM's incompetence than a coaches. You have toplay the hand you were dealt.

Someday Bears fans will understand that Ryan Bates played 3% of offensive snaps in Buffalo while completely healthy.

They will realize by week 2 or 3 this guy is a retread that Poles tried to get TWICE.

He's probably going to be just as disappointing as Lucas Patrick.

Poles was a lineman, and then a scout and director of player personal with chiefs...he is trying to 'moneyball' most of those positions to save money somewhere to be competitive. He hasn't done a good job....yet. I will wait to see if we have a disaster by week 3-4.

I don't think Shelton practicing @ C will hurt Bates competency there at all. He right there next to Shelton and needs to understand what the C's responsibilities are to play well next to him.
Doesn’t it make for sense for bates to be the center of that’s the plan though?

Sure but hard to figure out what's up with day to Davis.
I understand injuries happen all the time especially long the o line but it’s just kinda crazy to me they’re going to have gone through like 4-5 variations just in camp ….

Poles spent a 5th rounder for Bates. We’ll see if it’s another wasted trade.

then why didn't the bills let him walk when the bears offered him a deal as a RFA? they chose to sign him to the exact same deal the bears were offering

...and regretted it. Probably like we regretted resigning Charles Leno.

bet you what? that they didn't regret their decision to match a starting offer sheet to keep Bates

Put some skin in the game to match your mouth for once in your life.

Is he good or not? Let's figure out a bet.

They cut their starting center and instead of just plugging bates in they traded him for a 5th rounder AND ate part of his cap lmao

Because they had a more expensive option in McGovern, who they signed the year prior and his contract would have been harder to move without taking on penalties to cap.

Lmao

Who do they have playing guard in mcgovern’s absence? The gave David edwards a 2 year 6 million dollar extension to fill his spot.

If they loved bates so much why did they opt to eat a fair portion of his salary and move him for a 5th round pick??????? They would’ve just kept bates to play guard if they liked him

The Bills got rid of alot of players in the offseason. Its pretty well known that they had cap issues. They cut their starting center, traded Bates and moved McGovern to C even though he hasn't played since high school. His contract could not be moved without penalties. Made no sense to move him. They would rather eat the smaller amount with Bates and get a draft pick in return

And Edwards took over at guard. Who makes 3 million aav. Bates was at 4.2

But they did t save a ton of cap by moving bates. That’s the whole point I’m making.

If the bears took on the entire cap hit then it would make a ton of sense, but that didn’t happen.

They also extended a guard to fill mcgovern’s spot, they could’ve just kept bates considering they are paying most the cap hit.

Don’t you think there is some possibility they decided bates was the guy that they didn’t want and opted to move him not for money reasons but because he was a healthy scratch?
