How the Cubs didn't win this game is pure amazement.

Indeed it is. Good luck with that kind of defense against a real team.

The Cubs didn't win because they are a bad team with an inconsistent offense.

Any of us who voted when the poll was first posted have the opposite of what it says since due to someone's suggestion the poll was switched to reflect alphabetically order.

I wrote a blog trying to figure out that call at 2B against the Cubs. If you guys know the obstruction rule better than I, I'd appreciate some input because I'm having a hard time understanding why a fielder is allowed to launch at and knock a guy off the bag like that.

It seems like most people I have been hearing on the Score and the broadcast said that he ought to have been called safe. I don't know the rule well enough myself to say for certain.

I linked to the MLB.com runner rule (Rule 7) and obstruction is covered in rule 7.06 but is really open to interpretation. The umpire's saving grace is that I can't actually find the statement where it says "thou shalt not knock a player off a base" so I am leaving that open as a possibility for why he was called out.

Yeah I really don't know how it can't be called safe after looking at the replay since DeJesus was clearing on the bag, and was only off the bag after Beckham made contact. It would seem like that if that is called out that a fielder ought to try to make hard contact with the runner to try to get outs that way.

Also Eric Cooper is really quick on the trigger. I only saw replays of it so I don't know if Sveum was going to be out there til he got tossed or not, but Cooper is always quick on the draw.

There are two types of obstruction, categorized as "Type A" or "Type B".

Type A occurs when the baserunner is impeded by a fielder on the base paths while the fielder is in possession of the ball and the runner is being "played upon". In this case, the runner is awarded the base and the ball is immediately declared "dead" or no longer in play and the runner is awarded the base.

Type B occurs when the runner on the base path is being impeded by a fielder who isn't "playing upon" the runner. The umpire then decides whether or not the runner would have reached the base safely if he was not interfered with.

What occured today seemed to be Type A and Barney should have been awarded second base.
