Hollandsworth & Kaplan need to quit crying over that ball thrown at LaHair. Get over it.

Lets just play baseball.

There are two types of obstruction, categorized as "Type A" or "Type B".

Type A occurs when the baserunner is impeded by a fielder on the base paths while the fielder is in possession of the ball and the runner is being "played upon". In this case, the runner is awarded the base and the ball is immediately declared "dead" or no longer in play and the runner is awarded the base.

Type B occurs when the runner on the base path is being impeded by a fielder who isn't "playing upon" the runner. The umpire then decides whether or not the runner would have reached the base safely if he was not interfered with.

What occured today seemed to be Type A and Barney should have been awarded second base.

Where is that in the official rules? It was DeJesus btw, but I know all you white boys look alike

LOL. It was DeJesus, my mistake. Haha.

I remember the rule from my senior year of high school when obstruction was called on the opposing team. I still have the page that our manager handed out to us about it. Lol

This is the closest I could find to it online: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2008/official_rules/07_the_runner.pdf.

Page 66 is where it starts.

I found it on Wikipedia but couldn't find the addendum they claim this is in under Rule 7.06...

Yeah I really don't know how it can't be called safe after looking at the replay since DeJesus was clearing on the bag, and was only off the bag after Beckham made contact. It would seem like that if that is called out that a fielder ought to try to make hard contact with the runner to try to get outs that way.

Also Eric Cooper is really quick on the trigger. I only saw replays of it so I don't know if Sveum was going to be out there til he got tossed or not, but Cooper is always quick on the draw.

I watched the replay a couple more times after reading the HBT article (also linked in the blog) and then screencapped a few shots. Brett had suggested that DeJesus' hands/feet/whatever came off the bag before Beckham barreled into him, but I played it over and over again and I just didn't see it. DeJesus didn't come off the bag completely until Beckham basically teabagged him.

The replays I saw appeared pretty clear to me. DeJesus foot came off the bag, but he had his hand on the bag until Beckham drove his shoulder into DeJesus.

I'm just trying to make sure I wasn't seeing something different just because I'm not a White Sox homer or because I'm a Cubs fan.

If I thought the play was went against the Cubs I would say so. I think I am usually pretty good of citing the times I think we have caught breaks this season. I am waiting for the replay to load up again just to confirm what I saw. It is a bit closer than I recall, but it still looks like he isn't off the base until Beckham makes contact with him.

To me, it looks like the tag and the contact from Beckham is what took DeJesus off the base, but I guess I could see the argument that his foot would've come off due to his momentum.

I think what really hurts this situation is that there really isn't a precedent for this type of violation. It doesn't occur often enough for the umpires to make a consistent decision, especially with how fast it occurs in real time and without the use of instant replay.

too much time being spent on the beckham play. typical to look for excuses.

Someone apparently didn't read the article or has his imaginary reading glasses on to find where anyone here suggested that the call going the other way would have resulted in the Cubs winning.

On the otherhand I don't think it is unwarranted on our part to wonder if you guys caught a break though. It is at least as valid as wondering if Jeff Samardzija was trying to hit PK when he had 2 strikes on him and with his splitfinger.
