What's wrong with simply valuing sentient life, period?

Careful. You're making sense and Brett doesn't like that when it takes away an opportunity to judge others.

"I hope for you as well that you have as little contact with humans as possible. Good for all involved."

Yet you still respond, you must be Lutheran.

Bye

Hey now.... I was raised Lutheran. It's the damn Baptists you have to really watch out for.

Define sentient? I've met a few people that I'm not sure if they qualify.
IMHO everything is degrees, but aside from that you cannot take an absolute of "values the life of animals more than humans". Dufferent animals and different humans have different value when it comes to how you'd judge thier worth.

If you were in a scenario where you had the choice of having to kill someone who broke into your home, or they would end up killing your dog because his barking was making too much noise, I think most people would value the life of their dog over the life of the intruder. Conversely, if you saw a rabid dog about to maul your neighbor's kid, and you had a shot to kill the dog, you'd value the kid's life over the dog.

IMHO trying to make that stance an absolute is obtuse, political bullshittery.

Let's simplify the example and remove some variables.

If you had the choice to kill a person trying to kill your pet in the park as to prevent the killing of your pet, you should be arrested for killing the "pet hater".

Upon referencing himself, the Apostle Paul speaks of man in a very derogatory fashion. We do unspeakable acts to one another based on choice, animals do not have this capacity. I tend to view man as a destructive force who waste their lives toiling away, never truly finding their callings in life.

Wrong. People are allowed to defend their property.

Speaking of removing variables, when you remove your religious beliefs from the equation, it's not that difficult to make a common sense based moral decision. Lordkotl's examples above are right on, in terms of situations where it's appropriate to take either side.

And the Pentecostals.

I forgot the Jehovah's Witnesses. Oh my... I'll never forget all the Jehovah's Witnesses who used to canvas our neighborhood in Des Plaines. They make Mormon's look like slackers. :)

Anyone know any good Methodist jokes? I'm kind of Methodist by default now because of my wife. No one ever makes fun of us. :(

I fail to see how this explains the value of animals over humans
