With a pitcher it isn't a bad idea, but I understand the sentiment.

"The Book" had a chapter on bunting and I guess I should read it again, but one-out bunts are just a total rally killer.

I agree that they are terrible idea, but you have to take into account the suckiness of pitcher's hitting as you like to point out. A productive out, not to mention avoiding the double play, makes it somewhat defensible, but again only because pitchers suck at batting.

I used ump giveth, taketh away...

But that call and every Philly that made contact finding a hole in the infield in the first inning basically is the story of the game so far.

I think they should just let the pitchers swing away with one out. Run expectancy goes to hell with two outs anyway.

Or just give up and implement the DH. Fuck the sucky hitting.

I agree that one out bunts are generally a bad idea. I was just saying that I understand it with a pitcher at the plate due to the sucky hitting of most pitchers. Volstad's career .128 batting average makes it somewhat defensible as I said.

I know  I just despise bunts :D

So it sounded like the ump made a great save on a line drive.

My kid wanted to watch Tin Tin, which we rented. So I stopped watching the game. But you're preaching to the choir about bunts.

Tintin was an awesome movie. I'm annoyed that it didn't make that much $ in North America.

I am reviewing the play-by-play and see that Volstad got groundballed to death.

I don't know about after the first inning, but I swear the only the last hit by the Phillies didn't bounce at least twice on the infield. Volstad LOB% is ridiculous low which probably explains the 3 run difference between his ERA and his FIP.

Runs are runs, but it's safe to say that Volstad has the worst luck ever.

I heard that a mysterious balk was called.

I'll check it out when my kid is in bed (dvr the game just in case it got interesting). I checked it out because I was curious and Volstad has the lowest LOB% of any pitcher according to fangraphs. Some of that is ability, but it does suggest that eventual things will even out with Volstad.
