It wouldn't be crazy for him to be a Sept call up. Having more young guys add energy and excitement could only help.
Yep. And defense and speed are more reliable from s young guy early. Can use him in situations just because of that.

“We’ll see. He’s been playing great,” Hoyer said. “I think it’s way too early to talk about that. He hasn’t been in Triple-A too long, but he’s playing great. It’s been fun to watch. And obviously he has a skill-set, certainly, that can benefit us in a lot of ways.”

“Right now, we’re just focused on his development,” Hoyer said. “And it’s been fun to watch.”

It would take a major injury to a core player to make it happen.

The rosters goto 28 in Sept. It is more likely that Jed keeps those spots flexible for team needs like today

08/19/23Chicago Cubs designated C Tucker Barnhart for assignment.
08/19/23Chicago Cubs recalled 2B Miles Mastrobuoni from Iowa Cubs

Moves like this should be the more likely unless a team drops a gem on wavers that Jed jumps at.

So I was thinking about playoff caliber teams with the benefit of also having top5 ranked minor league systems.

That list is this big: Orioles, Brewers, Cubs, Reds

The Pirates are also in the top 5 but have fallen off the map, has it not been for injuries maybe they are still in the hunt.

But our division is quite stacked with young talent.

All 3 teams have the disadvantage against the Cubs of being smaller market teams. So as far as our division goes we are going to see a load of young talent going against us but not the pocketbooks.

I am getting pretty excited about him. Still only 22 and tremendous power.
Jed would be smart to push him to LF and Happ to DH.

I'm not 100% sure what Jed will pull this off season but a ideal scenario is

PCA CF
Horner 2B
Happ DH
Bellinger 1B
Swanson SS
Suzuki RF
Candinaro 3B
Canario LF
Amaya C

This takes pressure off Canario to produce. Morel goes to main sub off the bench.

His fast track is great. This is why it is important to draft college players in the first round. Far less bust rate and higher success rates.

Cubs: Matt Shaw, SS (No. 6)
Although Alexander Canario's power display (seven homers) has been impressive, Shaw gets the edge for a well-rounded performance at High-A. The 13th overall pick in the 2023 Draft slashed .393/.427/.655 with four home runs and seven steals in eight chances at High-A and picked up multiple hits in 11 of his 20 games before getting the call to Double-A. The shortstop is knocking on the door of a Top 100 ranking and is quickly justifying the Cubs’ $4.8 million investment.

So they put Shaw at 3B in Tenn. So this makes sense. Got to wonder if Jed pushes him up to the Cubs at 3B next year now. That changes the offseason dynamic. He can do 200 PA at Tenn then 300 at Iowa and push him to 3B mid season, That allows him to utilize Mad at 3B as a place holder and then let Candy walk. This opens up more payroll towards Bellinger as 200M is most likely his market value.

I'm convinced that he rarely, if ever, watches these players....just goes by the numbers put up on them at the various stats websites.

Owen Cassie only had 509 PAs all season in the minors. They don't play anywhere near enough games for Shaw to get that many and come up midseason for the cubs. At absolute best he would need a similar path that PCA took this season and PCA is only coming up with like 19 games left in the MLB season with Iowa only having like 12 left.

And before it gets mentioned, Horton is very unlikely to figure into the cubs plans next season either. Cubs babied the **** out of him this season only having him throw 84.1 IP. My guess is they stretch him out like 110-120 IP next season. Wicks for example has a better health track record and threw 7 IP his draft year(0 for Horton), 94.2 IP his first full year and thus far has only thrown 108 IP. He probably makes 1-2 more starts and I'd assume he's the odd man out when Stroman is back. Regardless, counting on Horton to have a David Price like playoff run is unlikely for a team you would at least hope to have playoff ambitions for in 2024. It's more likely they shut him down early than have him contribute late in the season.

I do. And this was more about saving some cash to retain Bellinger.

Mad has played plus D 3B for a while now. Way better than expected and he has been healthy.

So as a stop gap he is serviceable until Shaw is ready. Save a payroll hit and invest into the team MVP.
