I'm honestly thinking that the Cubs would be fine letting Tseng be the #5 next year and then buying a 1 year rental. Then replace that guy with Alzolay the following year.

They could just slot Hendricks inbetween Lester and Q. Then target a #4 that offers a diffrent look than What Tseng gives. Maybe 95+ FB/Slider mix that way Tseng is not the same offering the next day. Then Alzolay falls into the 95 plus role left open.

So I was thinking a little bit about Lange. If you know me I'm a big comp guy. I like finding guys who have similar numbers as potential projection points. I was curious how guys with relative control issues such as Lange turn out. The first name I thought of was player A

Lange in college(6-3 / 198 RHP from Lees Summit MO)
350 IP 2.91 ERA 1.22 whip 7.33 hits/9 0.64 HR/9 3.68 bb/9 10.44 k/9

Player A in college big 12(6-3 / 190 from Chesterfield MO)
206 IP 2.40 ERA 1.04 whip 5.90 hits/9 0.31 HR/9 3.50 bb/9 10.14 k/9

So who's player A? That would be Max Scherzer. Just found that as an interesting similarity. Also for what it's worth going back quite a while on baseball cube's college data I see names like lance Lynn and Drew Pomeranz popping up with similar 10+ k/9 levels and high walk rates in the SEC. In terms of Pac 10/12, Ian Kennedy, Gerrit Cole and Tim Lincecum pop up. JA Happ, Rich Hill popped up in list of big 10 guys. Alex White and Carlos Rodon popped up on the ACC list. That's the 4 big-ish conferences. And there's some selection bias here as there's a lot of guys i just don't know but i'm pretty plugged into prospect stuff so if I recognize a name he's probably worth mentioning. For example, IIRC white was a top 5 pick at one point though he was easily the most disappointing on this group of pitchers.

Haven't really been keeping track of AA hitters but noticed how good Ian rice has been. Not sure he sticks at C so that may limit his value but he's hitting like a power hitting 1B he may need to be. He's on about a 30 HR pace over a full MLB 650 PA season and the southern league isn't really hitter favored. Think it plays pretty neutral. Hitting .251/.360/.470 coming into today. If you could get by with him as a back up C on a team he's not a bad bench guy to have around.

He' be great to have if they could also transition him to backup catcher and learn the corner IF and OF spots.

Starting catcher=> plus O avg to plus D
Back up catcher=> Passable O plus D
Not a catcher=> see Schwarber for ref.

I don't want to go into another season with a question mark at 5 and Tseng is a question mark. First I haven't given up on Butler yet. The kid needed a full year in AAA to undo whatever happened in Colorado and to redevelop teh killer changeup he had early on, and he didn't get it as he was pressed into service. At least I know he can pitch in the major leagues, I don't know that about Tseng. There are also a lot of BOR pitchers out there in FA this year and musical chairs says one might end up a bargain, maybe a one year rebuild year.

I believe it had more to do with 28BB and 30 SO. 1.43 WHIP.

Sure his results turned out far better than his input. So you could say that he was luckier than his numbers were showing.

He really did not prove that he belonged. If anything the talent around him was giving him a undeserved boost.

If Tseng was putting out a 1.30 WHIP and walking as much as he SO then I wouldn't even bring up his name. But he has been more dominate in his input and the result has be positive on lesser talented teams surrounding him.

Now there is always the talent gap from AAA to MLB so nothing is ever final until a player has been battle tested. I'm honestly fine with him in the 5 man at the start of the season where they can upgrade latercseason if needed vs in the play off push.

Rucker with another decent start

5 ip 2 ER 6 hits 2 walks 4 k's.

Now at a 2.08 ERA over 65 innings at MB with 69 k's(9.55 per 9) and 15 walks(2.07).

had another very good start for Iowa, his fourth in four tries. His Iowa ERA is now a very healthy 1.42. He needed 101 pitches in this game, and that total marks the second time he has broken the 100 pitch mark in Triple A.

Barring something totally unexpected (or a trade), I will be surprised if Tseng, 22, is not called to Chicago in September (he is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after this season, and thus will have to be put on the 40-man roster anyway). I will also be surprised if he is not the Pitcher of the Month for July.

Really liking what Brandon Hughes is doing. He was hitting .314/.355/.486 coming into tonight. Mostly played RF but think he can play CF as well as switch hitting. Good bb/k rates as well at 6.6 % 19.7 %.

Tseng and Maples are both rule 40 eligible and would obviously be gone so I'd be shocked if either guy isn't here then. I don't think the Cubs will give him a spot in the 2018 rotation but I expect him to have a chance to earn one.

He is good enough to keep a roster spot open for. I doubt they lock the 5 up with another Anderson type. That was a huge mistake.

Rucker/Paulino into the cubs top 30 on mlb.com. Cubs now have 21 pitchers in their top 30.

Thanks for the link. Piggybacked off that to see the Cubs gave Bartman a WS ring. Good for them.

Aramis Ademan called up to south bend presumably as Paredes replacement.
