All about the fastball
I'm honestly thinking that the Cubs would be fine letting Tseng be the #5 next year and then buying a 1 year rental. Then replace that guy with Alzolay the following year.
They could just slot Hendricks inbetween Lester and Q. Then target a #4 that offers a diffrent look than What Tseng gives. Maybe 95+ FB/Slider mix that way Tseng is not the same offering the next day. Then Alzolay falls into the 95 plus role left open.
I don't want to go into another season with a question mark at 5 and Tseng is a question mark. First I haven't given up on Butler yet. The kid needed a full year in AAA to undo whatever happened in Colorado and to redevelop teh killer changeup he had early on, and he didn't get it as he was pressed into service. At least I know he can pitch in the major leagues, I don't know that about Tseng. There are also a lot of BOR pitchers out there in FA this year and musical chairs says one might end up a bargain, maybe a one year rebuild year.
Tseng and Maples are both rule 40 eligible and would obviously be gone so I'd be shocked if either guy isn't here then. I don't think the Cubs will give him a spot in the 2018 rotation but I expect him to have a chance to earn one.

Jen-Ho Tseng had another very good start for Iowa, his fourth in four tries. His Iowa ERA is now a very healthy 1.42. He needed 101 pitches in this game, and that total marks the second time he has broken the 100 pitch mark in Triple A.
Barring something totally unexpected (or a trade), I will be surprised if Tseng, 22, is not called to Chicago in September (he is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after this season, and thus will have to be put on the 40-man roster anyway). I will also be surprised if he is not the Pitcher of the Month for July.

Aramis Ademan called up to south bend presumably as Paredes replacement.
