Perhaps but without a gold glove 1b his error totals would gave been even higher. Castro is still an immature adult. Evidence so far doesn't show maturity coming anytime soon I think

How about cutting his error total down to only 8 in the second half?

I think Rizzo could do worse than to have a Derrek Lee-ceiling. Derrek Lee didn't exactly suck.

So I read this morning Rizzo is a cancer survivor. Does Hodgkins lymphoma cone back? Mario had it and he returned to the NHL

Because they use a lot of radiation and chemotherapy there's always the chance for a second malignancy to pop up. Depends on the individual's health and genetics and also a bit of luck. If he is fine for about 5-10 years after the cancer was zapped he's probably okay.

Hmmm. Good point but again how much was that thanks to Pena?

Pena had a good glove but he didn't exactly have a lot of range. Most defensive metrics suggest that Pena was also below average despite the eye test, so it's hard to know.

Basically, if a schlub like me can scoop balls out of the dirt playing beer league softball, just about any first baseman in MLB can too. Even Prince Fielder  First base defense is important but I also think it can be overrated.

I thought Pena's D was overrated last season, honestly.

Oh, and Buster Olney says the Cubs acquisition of Rizzo doesn't change their stance on Fielder :crazydance:

Olney's Latest: Red Sox, Fielder, Cubs, Mariners: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

definitely, i think that gold glove he won in 08 was also influenced by his overall performance that year

castro will continue to improve as well..not to mention the fact we'll have a better defensive 3rd basemen

dont think we'll get fielder but i do think we have a chance

A gold glove being influenced by what a player did with the bat? Say it ain't so... :troll:

i honestly think we should keep garza now...unless turner is offered

That makes no sense. Why would the Cubs keep Garza? That goes against everything that they have done this offseason.

Gotta squeeze all the usefulness out of LaHair first.

I don't take anything Thoyer says with more than a grain of salt. I think that once Rizzo is raking, they'll call him up.
We went from rumors of Garza for Rizzo, to Cashner for Rizzo?

lol

Good job, Jed!

See the series of quotes at the end of this post.

CO: Cubs will just trade Rizzo for Fielder whenever he signs with somebody.

Right... because it's not like I have said that I prefer Rizzo to Fielder.

there's no way...rizzo will be called up at some point next year

Exactly!

Thanks to our friends at MLBDepthCharts.com, if the season started today:
1 RF David DeJesus
2 SS Starlin Castro
3 CF Marlon Byrd
4 1B Bryan LaHair
5 LF Alfonso Soriano
6 C Geovany Soto
7 3B Ian Stewart
8 2B Darwin Barney

C Welington Castillo
IF/OF Blake DeWitt
IF/OF Jeff Baker
OF Tony Campana
OF Reed Johnson

1 RHP Matt Garza
2 RHP Ryan Dempster
3 RHP Randy Wells
4 RHP Chris Volstad
5 LHP Travis Wood

CL RHP Carlos Marmol
SU RHP Chris Carpenter
SU RHP Jeff Samardzija
MID LHP Scott Maine
MID RHP Manuel Corpas
MID LHP James Russell
LR RHP Lendy Castillo

Who cares? We're not done yet... it doesn't matter.

Yeah, that's ridiculous... I was hoping Prince and the Cubs were gone for good. I'm pissed, they are not going to offer a lengthy contract and block Rizzo. How would that make sense?

Exactly. They aren't going to do that.

Now for the quotes...

Captain Obvious said:
I'm really wondering if we could be able to trade McNutt or Cashner as a center piece for Rizzo. If the Theo Administration views Cashner as a RP, I think it'd be a good deal.

Bingo!

dabynsky said:
To be honest I am not certain what Rizzo would take since prospect for prospect trades are kind of rare, and the only prospect the Cubs have close to value of Rizzo is Jackson.

nwfisch said:
A deal with McNutt and Cashner as centerpieces likely wouldn't even be sneezed at by the Padres.

nwfisch said:
My whole point is that the Padres aren't even going to look at an offer for a Rizzo centered around an injury prone pitcher and McNutt.

nwfisch said:
My statement is Cashner and McNutt wouldn't be enough. And one or the other as a centerpiece wouldn't be enough.

The Padres are really stupid for giving up their top prospect for Andrew Cashner.
