Brett at Bleacher Nation seems to think that there were red flags in Haren's medicals. Shoot the guy that pitched last year for Anaheim would have been a real nice haul for Marmol.

Maybe these red flags will all of a sudden not matter quite as much to the Cubs if we can get him for essentially nothing but cash

He already got his $3.5MM so if he got maybe $8-10MM he might be happy. Not sure as a truly free agent he'd want to sign with the Cubs though.

I'd actually be surprised if he got that.

And can still trade Marmol too... plus Cubs are supposed to have plenty of payroll flexibility this offseason.

That's probably the best news in all this crap, is that someone out there actually wanted Marmol and others might too.

It means we only has $35 million committed for 2013 so we can deal with paying both and then some easily.

After arbitration and auto-renewals it's closer to $70MM. Payroll will hover around $100MM when all is said and done but the team will probably still suck.

I don't think they will, but if they did I'd want them to throw the armored truck at Greinke, Hamilton, Sanchez, Brandon McCarthy and maybe BJ Upton. If you're gonna splurge, do it with gusto.

Otherwise it's just a half-ass effort and they might as well just stick to the DeJesus/Maholm plan.
