I'm not saying that at all Dewey, just saying that signing Haren isn't going to make or break anything or require us to trade Marmol to stay within our budget.

I don't think they will, but if they did I'd want them to throw the armored truck at Greinke, Hamilton, Sanchez, Brandon McCarthy and maybe BJ Upton. If you're gonna splurge, do it with gusto.

Otherwise it's just a half-ass effort and they might as well just stick to the DeJesus/Maholm plan.

Oh, they're GOING to stick to the DeJesus/Maholm plan for this next season most likely. The following season the only significant committed money we currently have is to Sori & Castro I believe.

what was said?

Eno Sarris:
That can't be.
Dan Wade:
how bad would Haren's medicals be for that to be the case? He'd have to be half Zombie, right?
Eno Sarris:
I don't understand anything anymore

Jim Bowden:
LAA decline option on Dan Haren making him Free Agent while freeing up. $15.5 m of payroll flexibility a better move than trading for Marmol

Johnathan Bernhardt
I would hope the actual reason this trade's been (presumably) scuttled is that someone called LAA with a much better offer.

Colin Wyers:
If the Cubs pulled the deal off the table, what was in Haren's physical? Is he dead?

I can't speak for everyone, but the reason I was excited about the deal that didn't go through wasn't b/c I thought we were getting a legit #2 pitcher or anything...it was more b/c we were getting a guy who could rebound in the weaker NL (specifically NL-C) and be traded for 'spects at the deadline, much like Demp and Maholm, and like DeJesus should've been.

I still have no idea why Cincinnati didn't make a move on DeJesus. He would've fit their line-up REALLY well.

I guess the question now becomes, how much do you sign Haren for? Who is actually willing to take a chance on him? If the medicals are bleh, then his price should drop below my initial estimate. If he doesn't have a lot of offers then the Cubs could Maholmize him.

I think someone texted theo and told him to check fangraphs and his velocity and to look at baseball ref to see how many times he hit 200 innings in his career(which was a lot)

I believe until this year he was second behind Mark Buehrle in consecutive seasons with at least 200 IP.

I didn't care how much Haren has fallen off, the Cubs found a partner for Marmol. That's a win any day... Yes Twitter did mis-lead us again, but Marmol started the rumors. As he had a NTC and the Cubs asked him if he'll waive his NTC and said he was getting dealt by then. But the Cubs weren't high on his medical records an backed out.

I have a scenario in which the Cubs could still sign him now that he's a FA. They could possibly sign him to a cheaper contract and the Cubs were able to keep Marmol. I hope a team will still take Marmol.

Also, who the hell gives a RP a NTC? That's funny as hell.

It'll be interesting to see if this flirtation with Haren is a prelude of things to come for the Cubs this offseason. Preying on teams looking to shed salary to take their cast-offs in order to use them as assets either at the trade deadline or in the following offseason.

I can't confirm this, but I'd assume many closers have them.

And no, getting rid of Marmol isn't an automatic win regardless of what we give up... just no. He's only had one below average ERA+ since his rookie season, which was 2011, and it was a 98, barely below average, and a 115 this year. Only benefit is a little bit of salary relief. But in most trades the Cubs have been willing to eat salary to obtain prospects.

Dan Haren coming to the Cubs in FA is a possibilty. It may not have been medical records. It may have been the money changing hands. Haren and his wife were looking forward to coming to Chicago for a year. They said it would have been fun.

If it wasn't the medical records they would have gotten a deal done with another team instead of letting him walk for nothing.

you think someone is going to take his 9.8 million dollar contract? you will be lucky if someone takes him at half and still has to send a shit contract back.

Wasn't meant as a comparison just furthering your point.
