I would imagine Mervis if he truly can hit at the MLB level, fits in more at DH. Like I’m sure he will play some first base at times, but isn’t Bellinger a really good fielder? I havent heard anything about Mervis’ defense, but I imagine Bellinger is significantly better defensively.

that first base defense will really matter if we end up with one of the SS’s not named Swanson
Bellinger defense is better in CF. He is an outstanding OF with a strong arm.

Mervis defense is average. He is not a butcher, but he isnt GG caliber right now.

Bellinger was on the market as a CF. I dont see any way thats not what he was signed for the Cubs. Ross said he is smooth at first and a dynamic OF. So, my guess is he will be primary CF and can spell at first now and then.

Yeah Morel is gonna be the floater on this team, and play everywhere. So it makes sense to use Morel in CF when Bellinger plays first to let Mervis face better matchups.

Have the cubs said bellinger will play some CF? I figured he would play mostly first base.

Turner is more than a speed and contact guy. He has 124 home runs in his career and his 162 game avg is 24 home runs. He’s got pop in that bat too
Bellinger better be in CF. Any value he provides is there. Flexibility to play 1B is a plus, but unless he’s in CF 90% of the time they’re insane.

90% really?! Curious why that is.

Mervis is a righty and Bellinger is a lefty. Being a lefty is an added bonus at first base, too

IMO, if bellinger is the best fielding 1B we got, he should play a solid bit there. Let Mervis DH and occasionally play first when bellinger is in CF or needs a day off

Dumb question as I don't follow the Cubs closely enough - will Mervis be called up before the season or are ya'll just anticipating him being called up at some point in 2023?

He is in their plans. He may not break camp but only because of time clock on arbitration but there is nothing left to prove. It’s either majors or bust.

No clue lol

Maybe he wants to be a starter and the Taillon signing upset him? I dunno

Who knows. Players control their fate. Pitch 100 IP and put up a sub 3 ERA then maybe that might have made sense

Bellinger may have played first base and he may be able to share time or spell someone at first base but they did not give 17 1/2 million dollars to a guy struggling offensively so he could play a position where poor defenders are stuck.

I agree with you 100% that first base defense is important and it’s very very underrated in general, but there is no way on God‘s green earth the Cubs just signed Bellinger to play first base primarily.

After Taillon and Bellinger, the #Cubs luxury tax payroll is up to $176.5M for 2023. That puts them ~$54M below the first luxury tax threshold. Historically, they like to reserve $8-10M for in-season additions/contractual bonuses, so it's like they have $45M more to spend (1/2)

The way I look at it is…

The cubs didn’t sign bellinger to be a defense only player. They signed him to a one year deal hoping he gets some of his hitting value back. So playing him at first doesn’t really change anything.

you get Mervis at 1B and there’s certainly no guarantee his bat will be better than a former MVP anyways. So you could end up with Mervis at first hitting worse than Cody and playing worse defense

i will admit, I did think bellinger played more first base than he has in recent years.

The Cubs were horrible defensively in CF last year.

Bellinger is very good there.

They have no other options at the moment.

I don’t think he’s a CF and he needs to get/be healthy.
Long term I’m sure he’s not. Just wanted to hear how the glove is because if the glove is solid, I imagine he could play CF for a year since he’s young and playing CF in the minors
