Let me be clear here. You're saying the Cubs shouldn't trade for a player because he'll be a FA after 2023 season even and they can try to sign him then but then say whatever team trades for him will probably also sign him to an extension? I'm not disagreeing with the idea of holding on to what the team has and trying to fill 3B after this season. All I'm cautioning against is banking on the prospects holding or becoming more valuable versus dropping in value.

Prospects are another form of currency. Look at Kilian. We were talking rotation fix. Now?

There have been so many prospects that have fallen. Marquez. Another one.

So when Jed starts churning out talent then we can talk about it.

The core issue is the lack of talent that is self produced. That creates over value

With most of the dust settled for this off season, what move would have liked to have seen the Cubs make taking into mind what the player signed for and the Cubs would have to have beaten that offer? You could even negate a move made by the Cubs, such as they made a larger offer to Rodon so they never brought back Smyly.

Of course being pure hindsight, I would have hoped that Rodon could have been had for a 28 AAV deal and Bogaerts for a 26 AAV deal. This would negate the Smyly and Swanson deals and put the Cubs just under the CBT threshold. If I had to choose just one, I'd hope for the Rodon over Smyly choice.

Senga as his deal was extremely reasonable and was a high upside SP

I understand that thought except it seems fairly clear Senga wanted to pitch for the Mets. Maybe they really go over the top and offer him 20 M per.

About the only other thing I could even mention is Abreu but he got nearly 20 M per from the reigning champs.

I guess my point is, with some hindsight, I'm fairly pleased with the off season. Could have been better, but not by that much imo.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks

I wanted him too but I was thinking more in terms of closing....maybe we'll find our down the line but Japanese players aren't always interested in just how much someone will pay them. I'd guess something about Chicago scared him off....who knows, maybe he and Suzuki hate each other.

LOL, maybe he just doesn't want to get fucking shot at.

Hosmer isn't official yet, but Heyman reporting it is as close to official as it can be.

Cubs, Orioles Interested In Eric Hosmer
December 31st, 2022 at 4:11pm CST • By Simon Hampton
TODAY: It “looks promising” that Hosmer and the Cubs might work out an agreement, Heyman tweets.

DECEMBER 30: Free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer is “on the radar” of the Cubs and Orioles, per a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Hosmer is a free agent after being released by the Red Sox earlier this off-season.

Better than Dominic Smith. I'd like another option at 3rd base and some bullpen help now

I could see Moose at a league min deal also. Adds a LH bat that Ross can mix and match.

What would you think of and what it could take to get Yandy Diaz from Tampa? He's got 2 years of control left but will be 31 next year. He doesn't have much power but has done well batting lead off while also having an awesome FP at 3B. Don't know much about his range, but talk about taking care of a number of problems in one swoop. Could be worth Morel, a 6-10 prospect, and maybe one more minor piece.

Here is a simple rule of thumb. If a player is not good enough for the Reds he’s not good enough for anybody.

No. Just say no.

We don’t need to add all the old washed up schmucks thinking it will make us a little better. Hosmer and Moustakas in 2023? That is absolutely not appealing in any way, shape or form.

I dont mind Hosmer. He hasn't been bad. Moustakas is not worth a roster spot.

Fair enough.

Dodgers might end up trading Chris Taylor. Eat up some tax room after Bauer getting his suspension lifted.

It would be a strait dump so Jed could give some 2nd tier prospects. Cubs get a solid player that could end up taking over 3B.

Elias might end up as that 2nd lefty that we were expecting. Real nice story on him.

I was thinking Chafin. But this might make better headlines at a fraction of the cost.

Hosmer and Cubs are in agreement for 2023.

Happ LF
Bellenger CF
Suzuki RF
Wisdom 3B
Swanson SS
Hoerner 2B
Hosmer 1B
Gomez C
DH (most likely in rotation)

Somewhat the elephant in the room question, but how would you feel about trading for Bauer? Would the accusations against him just make him too hot to handle? Maybe go for a 3 team trade with the Dodgers sending the Cubs Bauer and paying 10M of his salary, the Cubs sending Hendricks to perhaps Cleveland or Minny, and that team sends a mid-tier prospect to the Dodgers. Dodgers get about 10M in CBT space and shed of a player they didn't intend to be there for 23, Cubs would still have about 10M under the CBT and get a guy who could possibly be a difference maker if they happened to be more than an 80 win team in 23. Third team gets a play off experienced pitcher on a deal that isn't going to break them for a mid or even low level prospect.

I don't have issue with him. But Jed and the rest of MLB most likely will avoid this and let LAD eat this deal and watch him make you tube videos for a year.
