Rumor on MLB TV has the Tigers scouting Barney. They have scouted Schierholtz already. Could mean something.

If they manage to get a top 5 tiger's prospect out of Barney and Schierholtz I'd be rather amused.

Det said they were just looking at his glove. They don't care about his bat. They have enough O on that team.

I'm just wondering on the depth back fill if they did pull a deal like that. They could move Sweeney (don't get the love here) to RF and Lake in CF. Valbuena to 2B.

Or have Boni play 2B vs LH pitching as Valbuena's platoon partner. Then move to CF vs RH pitching. Vs LH pitching Lake plays CF. Let LF/RF jumble around on match ups.

Who knows. But right now Olt/Valbuena/Ruggiano are all around 1.000 OPS and should be getting the playing time.

I don't see the desperation on the Tigers aspect to get Barney after picking up Romine rather cheaply. Romine seems like a similar type player of no bat/good glove at SS as Barney would be. I could see an argument for Barney being better, but it is a pretty marginal upgrade at this point. Schierholtz would be the guy that I think the Tigers would really want at this point since they need a platoon mate for Rajai Davis.

Cubs need to find any team that will give us something for him. His days are numbered here. We have way to many people that can take his spot at second and most likely be a good bit better at the plate.

I think you wait until Yankee infielders stop dropping which shouldn't take long to make your move on that front. Not going to get a lot either way, but Barney has value as a glove first middle infielder in a lineup that can carry him.

Oh yea, I expect a little in return unless they can package him. I think he knows the writing is on the wall.

22nd
The Tigers' recent trade for Andrew Romine suggests that they will not pursue Stephen Drew even though he's the best free agent available at shortstop. As owner Mike Ilitch ages, he may involve himself less with team business, and the team may be less likely to splurge when an opportunity arises. And the loss of a first-round draft pick is a high price to pay.
On the 19th.
The Phillies and Cubs were among the many teams who had scouts watching the Tigers' minor leaguers in action on Wednesday, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports. Earlier today, we heard that the Tigers were scouting Darwin Barney and Nate Schierholtz of the Cubs to address their holes at short and left field, respectively.

Tigers Monitoring Nate Schierholtz, Darwin Barney
By Charlie Wilmoth [March 19, 2014 at 2:25pm CST]
Tigers executive Scott Reid is scouting Cubs outfielder Nate Schierholtz and infielder Darwin Barney, Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago reports. The Cubs would be looking for pitching in return. The Tigers have lost outfielder Andy Dirks and shortstop Jose Iglesias to serious injuries. Dirks was slated to form the left-handed side of a left-field platoon with Rajai Davis. The left-handed Scherholtz would seem to fit the bill as his replacement, even though he has mostly played right field in recent years.

Barney has played shortstop only sparingly since 2010, and the Tigers have no real need at second base, with Ian Kinsler in tow. Barney is a strong defensive second baseman, however, and he has played a bit of shortstop this spring with Starlin Castro dealing with a hamstring injury. Barney recently told the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales that he would be fine playing shortstop. "Shortstop is my natural position," he said. "I feel very comfortable over there. The past three years at second base I've still taken balls at short almost every day as part of my workout to stretch my arm out. So I don't look at it as a transition." Barney hit poorly in 2013, with a line of .208/.266/.303 in 555 plate appearances, but he produced enough value with his defense to be above replacement level.

I would take it as they found their answer for SS. Nate is still a possibility but Barney is unlikely now.

Barney is in his Arb1 year right now. So they still have control over him until 2016. The fact he plays plus D at 2B and has proven good at SS also he still holds value as a primary UI.

What I see is Murphy being the guy to get cut when Baez gets promoted.

Im hoping they don't start Barney at 2B just to keep his value up over Valbuena who more deserving to start there.. Bonafacio also should be starting in CF over Lake.

Lake should play. The Cubs arent winning anything this year and Bonafacio isnt a piece going forward. Lake should see as many bats as possible.

Their not gonna win many games , but it doesn't do any good for him if he continues to struggle.

Its spring training. Lol He should play every game unless he starts to get completely over matched. I dont think people realize how good this guy can be if things click. No one should play over him in the OF at this point.

Im sure he will. I would like Bonafacio in the lineup more. I think our lineup is better with him in there at the top.

Bonafacio
Castro
Rizzo
Olt
NAte the Great
Lake
Sweeney
Castillo
P

I think that would be probably the best lineup the Cubs could put out with this team. Some parts are interchangeable.

I agree. Valbuena deserves ti be in there too.. wouldn't surprise me to see different line ups early on.

Only way that works:

1: Bonifacio CF
2: Castro SS
3: Rizzo 1B
4: Olt 3B
5: Schierholtz RF
6: Ruggiano LF
7: Valbuena/Barney 2B
8: Castillo C

Here is my problem with Sweeney: 3 for 36. 1 BB 10 SO's. That doesn't justify a roster spot.

Ruggiano: 11 for 34 2 BB 7 SO's.
Lake: 7 for 35 2 BB 14 SO's.

Little more of an argument here. I'm in the Ruggiano starting camp.
