To those who keep saying the word....

I would like to know in what world a 4.89 ERA over 29 starts, with a WHIP of nearly 1.43 is "solid"?

The guy's "ceiling" is Zambrano's "mediocre".

Excellent article, MarkyMark.

Glad to see you cite your references! Good trait to have. Very academic, but very down to earth.

I don't know. I think it's trying to be positive. Good things have been said about almost every player we've gotten this off-season and I don't see most of it.

What Zambrano are we talking about? The peak Zambrano is gone physically at this point, but Zambrano very well could out pitch Volstad next season.

I have put forward the idea that he has some interesting peripherals in that he gets a lot of groundballs, doesn't walk a lot of people, and therefore has a decent k-bb walk rate. He has given up a lot of homeruns when teams put it in the air and teams get a lot of hits against him. That is why he has struggled in the past, and why it is likely that he will struggle again this year. However, those peripherals I mentioned suggest that he is capable of doing better. Not that he will do better, but that it is possible that he could be more in the low 4s, maybe even high 3s, ERA wise as opposed to the high 4s or more.

Many do feel a need to be positive at this point for whatever reason. The interesting thing that Theo and company have done is acquired a lot of guys coming off bad years with the potential to improve. That doesn't mean that they are going to improve, but since we aren't competing this year why not acquire as many of these types of players and hope for bounceback years?

For Cubs to get back a young MLB SP was amazing. I was impressed by this deal
