Last 3 season's for Volstad (ERA):

5.21
4.58
4.89

Teams hit almost .290 off him in 2011.

Would a lot of ground balls be a good thing? Seeing how we led the majors in errors and all.

If they're on the ground, they're not leaving the yard, which has been Volstad's problem. So it's not ideal, but it's better than being out of play. At least if it's in play they have a chance to convert the out

The other thing is that this newfangled coaching staff is going to hopefully help improve the infield defense, so it might not be as leaky as it was last year.

Uh Volstad is far from solid. Career ERA near 4.60 son.

he's improved in the strike out department every year...as well as SO/BB

i wouldnt say 4.6 is good..but it isnt awful either....

he is improving and he's 25...

solid doesnt mean good or top of the rotation...

Most of us on here are guilty of saying "I'd trade Z for a bag of baseballs..."

Well, we got the next best thing.

Honestly, I'm just glad the dick hole is off the team.

2 bits of great news tonight: X-Rays negative on Rose's elbow & Big Z is off to Florida. Volstad could be Steve Trout & I wouldn't give a crap, I'm just so relieved to have that selfish, petulant man-child off the team.

We were good at defense when you played Ernie
That was years ago though.

Yeah, that's a good point. I would much rather have potential out ground balls than home runs. And hopefully Starlin works on his D this summer. I am sure we will see improvement. But we also have to factor in all the young new guys we keep bringing in out of the woodwork.

How many more Gatorade machines will be destroyed at his expense?

Not sure, but the Marlins do have a new fishtank...

Z's 2013 option vests if he's in the top 4 in NL Cy Young voting. I think the writers should conspire to vote him into the top 4 to make Miami pay it since they're not actually using their own money to pay for the ballpark and most of the payroll. Bilking the taxpayers and gobbling up revenue sharing funds means payback's a *****.

ERAs don't tell you everything about a pitcher. Especially if the sample size is small.

sure ERA doesnt if it is a sample size, but it is NOT a sample size.

This I wasn't going to another game until that ***** was off the team what he did in Atlanta was the worst thing ive seen in baseball. It is ok if you suck but don't intentionally blow the game so you get ejected than quit and say I am retiring while quitting on the team.

Cant win with guys like that

Just like The Cubs have for the past decade on park improvements. Lie to the public/fans/residents and do as they please after getting approval. (bleacher expansion, shot into Wrigley from the of, restaurant in cf)

This team as it stands isn't even close to the 62 Mets, or the 1890 Pirates or the 1899 Cleveland Spiders or anything else.

We aren't even the worst team in our division...

I know you believe that. And I am not saying that I 100% disagree. But I think the Cubs won't be favored in any more then say 10-20% of their games this year to win. And while they may not ever get to 120 or so losses, one could make a solid case that losing 100 on the most established franchise in sports is worse than an expansion team losing 120 in '62

Like I have said, there's a chance that the Cubs in '12 could be historically bad.

True. But being better than Houston isn't really saying much.
