Both were clearly overvalued by fans. Seems to be some despute on the money the Cubs are picking up. Baseball America article has the Indians paying 4 million of the deal, but ESPN is still reporting the Indians paying 775k. The money really swings the deal one way or the other. Also Bruce Miles is reporting the Abner Abreu was the key guy for the Cubs.

Muskat says $775K so I think that's two votes in favor of the small number. Can't expect too much more than what they got back, methinks.

Yea I am guessing that it is the 700K figure. I was just holding out hope that the Cubs got a better deal. Either way, this deal reeks of Jim Hendry with getting a toolsy atheltic position player with zero clue what he is doing at the plate. Perhaps we get lucky and he harness as that raw athleticism, but our success rate at that implies it is more than a long shot.

Apparently Abreu was the Indians 23rd ranked prospect. I am guessing that Carlton Smith was not ranked. Again I am guessing this doesn't bode well for any potential return on Carlos Pena.

Cubs probably have to pick up most of the deferred salary to get a prospect, and probably won't be a good one. Free agents at the end of their deals, unless they're spectacular, typically don't get a lot back barring some desperation from the other team.

I mean, you could possibly expect to nab a top 10, let alone top 5, prospect in ANY system for Kosuke.

Another 175 lb OF in the Cubs' system; wonderful!

this was a good trade

hendry made a good move here imo:clap:

frees up some salary room and also makes some room position wise for Brett Jackson to come in

There is no cap and the move was made to give Tyler Colvin room apparently.

more flexibility financiality with fukudome's contract alleviated(my bad i forget sometimes that baseball has no cap lol)...you know what i meant:shifty:

so if this move was to bring colvin up..then will someone else in the outfield be traded to let jackson come in next year or sometime later this year?

Technically the only cap is how much spare change the Ricketts have

I think Jackson has to work on some things before the Cubs will call him up. I am not sure to be honest what the Cubs are going to do. I am guessing Colvin gets a few weeks to show if he has improved or not before a move is made.

The Cubs really didn't save that much money in the deal. They are paying all but nearly 800k of Fukudome's remaining salary. 800k can be a few overslot guys, but it isn't a ton of cash saved either.

I think they save BJax for September so his clock doesn't start while they basically have no chance of contending and his presence won't add all that much anyway.

I was told by my source the Cubs could get his salary paid by Cleveland but they wouldnt get a prospect just a player to be named later(likely no one')

But they really wanted that OF Abner Abreu im told. I would of took just his salary paid but they liked Abner Abreu enough to take him instead.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, Abreu is exactly the kind of guy the Cubs covet.

Depends what rankings you go by. BA didn't have him in the Top 30 for Cleveland.

I think we can all agree that Abreu has the most upside and that neither is a significant prospect.
