Should Cubs re-sign Barney?

he is a FA after two season, and if so for how much?

Are you high?

1. He isn't a FA
2. Yes, he should be our starting 2B for years to come because of his D. He's not going to produce offensively, but he can fit in in the 8th spot. His defense is just unmatchable.

I wouldn't mind someday replacing him, but he's really grown on me because of how valuable his glove is.

A -Castro-Barney-Rizzo infield for the next while could be extremely good defensively, as long as the 3B doesn't pull them down too much.

One thing the Cubs have going for them next year is defense, with Soriano holding his own, Jackson in Center, DeJesus, and this infield.

I think Barney is arbitration eligible starting in 2014. So he's definitely back next season at league minimum. Of course you keep him.

How about we wait on this until A Barney is even close to FA eligibility, B we get a better read of what will be available around that time, C we see how the already potentially better options on the farm have progressed, D determine if Barney's value will ever expand beyond his defense, and E figure out what other offense might be assembled in the other 7 slots of the lineup? You know, come back to this in... oh... 3 years or so.

BTW, Barney isn't FA eligible until 2017. He won't even be Arbitration eligible until after next season. No need to even think of extending or re-signing him yet.

I wanted him out of here before, but now, I wouldn't mind at all keeping him at 2nd for a long time. Solid D, and can manage to be halfway decent at the plate, plus he hustles.

If Svuem is right and he is one or two alteration away from clicking offensively, he could be a fixture for years. Time will tell though.

Ride him out through his cheap arbitration years to see if he can figure things out offensively. He isn't helping much with the bat, but he is saving games with his glove.

With another error-free game Saturday, Barney now has the National League record for consecutive errorless games by a second baseman at 124. He has also has passed the 1,000 consecutive innings mark without a miscue, with his last at second base coming April 17 at Miami.

Barney just broke a tie with former Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg, who went 123 consecutive errorless games at second between the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Barney’s streak was already the record for most consecutive errorless games at second base in a single season.

The major league record for consecutive errorless games at second base in a single season is 141 set by the Tigers’ Placido Polanco in 2007. Barney can still reach that number before the end of the season.

Polanco also holds the overall record at 186 games, set from 2006-08.

That'd be 125 now with this game.

And he took risks... made 3 plays today that he could have easily missed and been charged errors for.

I merged the other Barney thread with this one as the defense alone warrants a tendered contract since he's pre-arb next season and will still be league minimum. There's a place for Barney on any team as a defensive specialist and as a #8 or #9 hitter. He probably saves more runs on defense than he costs on offense which is probably why his defensive WAR metric is way off the charts. And possibly why I don't trust defensive metrics :D But it's hard to argue that Barney is good at defense.

Darwin Barney now has played a National League single-season record and overall NL record 126-straight games without an error at second base. The old overall NL mark was 123 games, set by Ryne Sandberg, June 21, 1989, to May 17, 1990. The Major League record single-season errorless streak by a second baseman is 141 games, held by Placido Polanco and set in 2007 with the Tigers.

Barney has the day off today.

ESPN:

Darwin Barney got at least five innings off Tuesday. The second baseman wasn’t in the starting lineup against the Astros’ left-handed starter, but he came on to pinch hit in the sixth inning. The late substitution means that Barney played only four innings while still adding another game to his consecutive errorless game streak, which is now at a National League record 127.

Sveum has made it clear Barney deserves the Gold Glove this year, saying the second baseman can change a game with a defensive play. He’ll get an argument from Phillips. The Reds second baseman thinks he’ll win another trophy.

“I feel like I should,” Phillips said. “I feel the Gold Glove is mine to stay until somebody beats me to it.”

I've lost count of Barney's errorless streak. But he's not like a Jeter who doesn't get errors because he can't get to balls. The guy has tons of range, always getting to balls that are way out of his zone.

Going back to the Jeter thing, He's one of the worst defensive SS's ever... Someone posted an article on a forum a while ago that had the stats to back it. Of course, if you bring it up to Yankee fans, they call you a liar and flip shit on you. Had it happen several times..
