Another errorless game for Barney?
Another errorless game for Barney?
Darwin Barney is now one game away from tying the Major League record for consecutive error-less games by a second baseman. On Wednesday at Coors Field, Barney played in his 140th error-free game, and is one away from matching the Major League mark of 141 games, set in 2007 by Placido Polanco. Barney is rewriting the National League mark each game as he surpassed the old record of 123 games, held by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who was Barney’s former Minor League manager. Barney leads all NL second basemen in fielding percentage and has made one error this season. His error-less streak is now 1,139 1/3 innings.
With yet another error-free game Thursday, Barney has now played 141 consecutive games at second base without making a miscue. He tied the single-season record set by the Detroit Tigers’ Placido Polanco set in 2007.
Barney already owns the all-time Cubs record for consecutive errorless games at second. Ryne Sandberg had a 123-game run from June 21, 1989-May 17, 1990. David Eckstein had the previous NL record for consecutive errorless games by a second baseman in a single season at 113.
If Barney plays the remainder of the Cubs’ games this season, he could push the single-season mark to 147 games. His only error at second base this season came April 17 at Miami. He has now gone 1,148 1/3 innings since that miscue.
I saw some random people on twitter saying things like "there goes his chance for the gold glove", which I think is way overreacting but if he doesn't end up with it I will beat the shit out of every voter.
