You can't offend an entire community and curse at a ref without big time fines. There's a lot of homosexuals who watch the NBA or are sensative to public figures throwing out insults of that nature. If Stern let Kobe off with a small fine or no action at all he'd have rally's outside his office in no time, the NBA doesn't need that over an adult who can't hold their tongue.

Can't blame him for fining Kobe in that amount, the crime fits the punishment and Kobe even knows it.

Kobe has the right to say whatever he wants. It's called Freedom of Speech. Nothing in the constitution says anything about possible fines for saying something that offends someone else.

EL-OH-EL. Freedom of speech just says you can say it, it doesn't say the guy who pays your bills has to listen. Kobe is free to say what he wants, Stern is free to fine his ass if he doesn't like what Kobe says. If Kobe is not happy with that situation, Kobe can go find a job playing in the D-league or something.

On the SVP show today, Van Pelt said, "Dude, you speak 4 languages, call him a name in Italian next time. "

Why does Boozer not get fined everytime he gets a rebound & screams at the top of his lungs "GIMME DAT SHIT!"? I know we've all heard it many times this year. Granted he's not yelling it at a ref but seriously, the only reason Kobe was fined was he was caught blatantly on TV saying it. If TNT didn't stalk after him to try & up the "drama" in the game, this would be a total non-issue. I have heard much worse things said during the course of games. That's not to condone it, but honestly this whole thing is completely blown out of proportion.

Nobody is going to cause a huge stir outside of NBA games and offices because Boozer said shit. Degrading an entire group of people on Live TV is different.

I understand what you're getting at but the situations are a little different. Had Kobe called him a *****, we wouldn't be talking about it. Because he called him a ******, it's a national news story now.

I'm not claiming they are the same. I even said as much. And seriously, Kobe was not sitting there thinking, "Hmmm, I'm going to offend an entire group of people on Live TV & I don't care". It was the heat of the moment. Does he regret it? Of course he does, but let's not make this out like "Kobe hates all gays" or this was some sort of pre-meditated slight. It was the heat of the moment & it just so happened to be caught on camera. And if the camera caught Kobe calling the ref a "F'n *****!" he still would've been fined because the entire world saw it on TV. And yes, everyone would be talking about that as well. If it's not caught on camera this is not even a story at all, it's really that simple.

For it being on TV.....they did nothing wrong. If Kobe wasn't flipping out, the camera would have never stayed on him. That is their job to cover all aspects of the game. I see no fault on their end. If Kobe doesn't flip out and call him a fucking ******, this thread isn't created and he has $100,000 he can spend on golden dolphin statues and golden sneakers.

Nobody is at fault except for Mr. Bryant.

Kobe doesn't know it. That's why he's appealing and that's why didn't even really apologize for it. So you think homosexuals would have stopped watching the NBA if Stern didn't fine him? LMAO c'mon dude. What if Kobe is at a bar and decides to call someone a f a g g ot. Who's going to protect the homosexual community then?

Kobe has apologized for it multiple times. Did you not read his statement? How about you read this Bryant's comments 'mistake of the mind' – In the Arena - CNN.com Blogs

Kobe knows damn well he deserves that punishment. He's just doing whatever he can to save some money. If Kobe says something in a bar, at least it's not done in front of everyone on television and at least it's not done during an NBA broadcast. Now days the homosexual community has a lot of pull and the NBA has every right to do what they want to make this shit storm go away.

The homosexual community has no pull. They can't even get legalized marriage :lmao: All they do is organize *** pride parades and wear pink shirts and orange bracelets, and yellow polka dot socks. Congrats!

Now you're coming off like you have an agenda. Should've known. The homosexual community has a voice now days, something they didn't have as recent as the 90's. A voice is all you need in America to have some pull.

Anyone can have a voice. Pull is different than a voice.

You don't really have a voice unless it's in numbers. That's something the *** community has. To deny they have no pull is just plain ignorance, and if you choose to be ignorant then that's your own issue.

While I agree that the slur wasn't the best choice of words to use, it is NOT Stern's job to legislate what type of language his players can use on the court. If Kobe wants to call the ref a fa**ot, he's entitled to do so.

In any other job in the world, if you called a fellow employee a fa**ot, your boss will probably tell you not to do that again. He does not have the right to fine you or take a piece of you paycheck away.

Man, where the heck do you work at??? I have seen high ranking corporate members relocated to Siberia for that type of language.

Stern makes up random fines and suspensions whenever he gets his panties in a bunch over something. There is no consistency to his actions. And I'm pretty sure the contract doesn't specify that calling someone a ****** is a fineable offense. The player code is too vague.

The endorsement deals are a completely separate deal and have no impact on this discussion. Nike can't fine MJ for calling Phil Knight a f a g g o t. They can end the deal but they can't fine him.

Stern FIRED Tim Hardaway for a similar offense. So this is nothing new. In 2011 you don't say that word or other slurs in the workplace. Kobe was IN THE WORKPLACE. Now wherever you work, there is most likely a code of conduct. You sign papers saying you will abide by it. If you call someone a slur like that and nothing is done, the company is libel and could be sued. That is a fact, backed by FEDERAL LAW!!! You are bound to what the "boss" wants you to wear, what not to say, etc....

I cannot believe people don't find that type of language offensive at this point in America's history...its absolutely crazy...

Me personally it doesn't bother me Kobe saying f****t since I say it myself but I don't say it in the way of I hate gays or anything like that,I just say it in place of another cuss word or something like that. Most *** people take it offensive but I guess it depends on what context your saying it sometimes whether it would be meaning it actually about a *** person or just saying it instead of mother f****r or something else(not saying either is right)But is it right for Kobe or me or anyone else saying it or cussing in general or saying racial or sexist slurs? No. I think he should have been fined and he really doesn't have a reason for arguing it. It probably is in his contract about cussing and him getting fined if he does say anything like that and he should since like some people said on here it is a job and he should try and control it more since he is in the spotlight like the way he is. If I said that to a coworker at work I would probably be fired.
