What is the origin of Reality TV, and how do we mine it for a new generation of tv programs while pretending we didn't just steal the ideal from reality TV.

As Jako rudely implied - it was probably the Real World opening the door and then Survivor making the format successful in the "Prime Time" slot that really started the trend. If you want to go back even a little further though - COPS was probably the grandfather of all reality programming and the real progenitor. Once networks found out how little it cost to produce these kinds of shows and just how many people tuned in, it was all over from there. The Writer's Guild going on strike didn't help either... rather than justifying their cause it created an opportunity for more Reality/Game shows as well as pushed others to discover other formats through the web (see: Dr. Horrible).



As for how we look for new material... I think they've already started by seeking to take old concepts and refreshing them (see: Sherlock) or just plain stealing from the Brits and re-making for an American Audience (see: Life on Mars, Being Human). With the success of Twilight, it seems many networks are more willing to take a chance on fantasy/science fiction as they're realizing there's a bigger audience for it - so the "mining" of ideas from authors (both in graphic and novel formats) in these areas is another place where I think we'll start to see some major saturation from.



I'm optimistic we'll start seeing more "written" shows - if Networks can listen the critics long-enough and realize the greatness of shows like 30 Rock and Community there's potential to even raise the bar on the standard-fare sitcoms - although I'm less optimistic of this chance.



And with that said, I think shows like American Idol and Survivor are too much enmeshed into the American cultural landscape to go away anytime soon - so it's really more about just how MANY we'll continue to see every year.



But what do I know?

Some would say MTV's The Real World (ha!) was the origin, but I believe that Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Survivor really brought the idea of Reality TV and reality game shows to the fore. And seeing as those most reality game shows are rip offs of European game shows and reality type shows such as real housewives et al. just kinda propagate off themselves and become bastardized versions of bastardized bastards, it is almost a self-sustaining monster.

Some questions are just un-answerable and I fear the ladies on this site might not be willing to opine on this subject due to their delicate sensibilities.



In my discussions with the fairer sex, the only answer I've ever really gotten was that, "It's gross." Sometimes you just have to appreciate those ladies that will, as you say, "be a champ" or just be appreciative that any lady would be in that area attempting to bring you pleasure.

Our cats keep wearing out. The neighbor tells me it is coyotes geting them at night by am concerned they have a design flaw or maybe I'm babying them too much. What should I do. They are an integral part of the varmint control plan we have implemented for our yard/home. Am I getting to concerned about it, I mean there is a ready supply of cats to be had on the cheap. My kids seem to get attached too them too easily though.

Well... the easiest way would be to invest in one male and one female and DON'T fix them (**** you, Bob Barker) - then you'll have all the cats you'll need as well as coyote bait.



And one way to make sure the childrens don't get attached is to stop naming them... it just makes it harder when they disappear.

As I understand it, with an "escort" copulation in not necessarily implied. Maybe more for the GFE? Or it's just the legit way of getting around that nasty "prostitution" label where you aren't specifically paying for the use of the lady's genitals but her company and anything she does outside of being your company is between you and her.



Hooker would be anyone who takes money for sexual favors. Whore can have many meanings and include hookers, but I think it just refers to a derogatory term for a (usually) woman with loose sexual mores.
