It's obviously a fluid situation with Briggs probably as the only guaranteed starter.

I'm interested to see what Shea looks like standing up but not getting my hopes up; I'd expect he might be used in passing situations as a stand up rush backer, but he'll certainly get every chance to compete for a starting spot as he's Emery's boy.

I am expecting a good deal of improvement from Bostic no matter where he plays. His talent is obvious. Just needs to understand the game and read his keys better.

I guess as long as they envision Bostic being on the field and not on the bench, thats probably the best we can hope for. I just don't want another repeat of last year's Emery-speak "We'll start the guy who makes the most plays in the preseason at MLB", then end up starting the guy who missed nearly the entire preseason with an injury.

If they sign Williams I fully expect him to be the day one starter at MLB. Bostic and McClellin will compete for the remaining spot

But what happens on day two, after Williams is injured/suspended?

Best guess? Bostic beats out McClellin for Sam due to familiarity with playing LB and being relatively better in covereage. If Williams goes down, McClellin starts at Mike while Bostic stays at Sam.

I think there's a good chance they are going to draft a mike in the middle rounds as well.

that is a disconcerting scenario. and with briggs turning 34 this year and due for the inevitable fall off the cliff anytime now, we'll be looking at bostic, mclellin and greene? yuck.

The thought of Shea trying to cover a decent TE down the field is somewhat...disturbing.

You could probably say the same for any of the Bears LBs. I don't think there's a particularly good coverage LB on the roster. Already dreading when Jimmy Graham comes to Chicago next year.

He covered guys like Witten before in a few plays. Nothing excessive.

Is he too slow? or is he not agile enough? or just plain old bad in coverage?

From what I could tell everytime he covered someone last year they didn't throw the ball to the guy he was covering and he did an excellent job of running stride for stride with the TE...

I guess he can't do anything... we might as well cut him if what you say is true...

Shea has appeared lost on the field at times. He has lost the location of the ball. I just don't think he has a great football sense to him. It may just take longer for him, but he does have the physical attributes to play linebacker, I just fear the mental aspect of it for him.

Agree...and whats even more amazing is that 75-80% of the time the ball is either directly in front of him or directly behind him.

You must be talking about Bustic.

I agree Shea can never play LB since he can't play 3 downs with his hand in the dirt. Any other LB on the Bears can play DE except Shea. They are basically the same position.

So the linebackers will be Greene, Bostic, Briggs, Williams, and Shea. Hopefully a new player is added to the mix.
