Bustic was much faster/quicker/explosive at getting out of the way of the football when compared to McClellin. I saw McClellin get steamrolled a few times. Bustic was usually able to get the hell out of there.

that's bostic's biggest problem. he tries to run around blocks which, in the NFL, is a terrible habit.

Can't go big-ticket FA at every position. DJ will most likely be on a vet-min contract.

Not my favorite move, but you're right, DJ will give some insurance to the Bostic/Shea mystery at LB. I don't think the goal is to put much money into the LB spot.

Remember when he did hit the right hole against Dallas on a few occasions and Murray shrugged him off like a gnat.
We rarely saw this "big-hitting" LB'er that we saw in the preseason. At least Shea broke a collarbone! Lol.

I was one of the first to be critical of Bostic on here and I got ripped for it.

Shea has appeared lost on the field at times. He has lost the location of the ball. I just don't think he has a great football sense to him. It may just take longer for him, but he does have the physical attributes to play linebacker, I just fear the mental aspect of it for him.

He's lost cuz he's in the wrong spot for him. Shea is very much an instinctual player. Playing DE, he's thinking about the run against bigger guys, and containing. Shea can't contain cuz he's too busy chasing the ball. He was definitely thinking too much.

Coming out of the combine, his numbers were on pace with the best LB's coming out. He needs to be in a spot where he can chase the ball and not think too much. My best guess is at the mike, dunno, but I'm very intrigued to see him play LB, myself.

I've pretty much written him off at the DE spot, but I won't at the LB spot until I see him play.

I don't get labeling specific players as "looking lost". the entire defense looked lost. I yearn for the old days when we blamed Tucker for everything. I hope that doesn't happen this year, but just saying..

also when's the last time the Bears shuffled the chairs on the deck and it actually worked? Danieal Manning in year 5?

If Emery can add some star players back to the defense, and these guys we're hand picking to come back can stay healthy, it could change the whole defense, but unfortunately I agree, the Tucker stigma won't go away until we actually see the final product on the field.

I do really like the new defensive coaches we brought in, however, and think they will help as well.

Man... Some posters need to work on their thread titles... The title made this seem like it was almost done not just in the feeling out process.

D.J Williams was solid before his injury...If we can bring him in on a similar deal to last year and get similar production it will be a steal. He is a 3-down linebacker who can blitz and go sideline to sideline.

he was adequate, but the big issue is that he's only played 26 games in the last 3 seasons, and 13 in the last 2. he's not much use on the sideline and he'll 32 in july. ideally, he's a back-up if he comes back.

Backup for who? There are too many other important spots to fill on this defense than to be signing a big name Mike linebacker. D.Jackson got way overpaid by the Colts and after him, I don't really see any LB's worthy of starting over D.J. If the Bears do the right thing and sure up the DT rotation, it will make life much easier on D.J and we will see him flourish.

Three seasons ago, before testing for banned substances became the norm, this would be a great signing. Unfortunately that's not the case. This guy is toast. I'd actually rather see the Bears sink or swim with Bostic in the middle than Williams. Williams isn't going going to stay healthy, like most athletes that jucied for most of their careers, & he won't be worth a damn when he is on the field. The Bears really need either Bostic to step up or make a real move for a real MIKE LB in this defense. If the Bears are going to effectively run a 4-3 1-gap Tampa 2 they need to be strong at UT, MIKE LB, & either or both Safety positions. If the Bears don't improve at the MIKE LB position, even if they fix the front 4, that's only going to go so far, & only make them the same defense they were before Henry Melton was injured. Which was basically an all or nothing defense that gave up points, a lot yards & big plays but m,anaged to check out because of an unrealistic, unsustainable take away rate.

IMO MIKE LB is the second most important position in the Bears system, in the eyes of some it's the most important position. Williams didn't work out last year, he isn't going to pan out this year. If there is a good MIKE LB on the board after the first round I hope Emery takes them.

You have no idea if he is going to work out this year. Williams has played solid his entire career and in a time of need for so many defensive positions he would be a worthwhile signing.
