I'm currently going to the University of Phoenix which is online. It has nothing to do with laziness, but with time. I work a full-time job since I have bills and need money. I don't have time to go to a campus and can't do it because of money reasons. Nothing to do with laziness as I'm not lazy and very active. So, I completely disagree with that statement.

I don't how that even goes with my post. But okay...

Yeah..sounds about right.

Yep, aptitude and attitude. I hired two guys at the same time for the same position because we needed to fill four spots. One guy that only had a two year degree with significant work experience, and another guy with a degree from a well known college and a little less experience. The guy with the two year degree constantly wants to learn new things, is into everything if there is a tech problem, and learns without needing expensive training. Simply put he is a "go getter".

The other guy is a good employee as well, but expects to be told exactly what to do and wants formal training before diving into something. He does well on tasks but needs a lot more direction. The other guy just needs to be told to go solve this problem with little direction and does, mush easier to manage. aptitude and attitude means a lot.
I'm just curious as to whether the two year degree guy is able to do more things with less instruction because he has more work experience or if he really is a "better employee" than the four year guy based off of pure skill. Sometimes people who go get an associates are just really really good at one thing and they'll excel in that one thing more so than his classmate who got into some big school but is more of a jack of all trades master of none type.

They are both very intelligent, it really doesn't have to do with their degree, but more to do with who they are. The guy with the two year degree knows a lot more about the field in all aspects. He just enjoys learning and technology, he is smart and WANTS to know how everything works. The other employee works hard while he is at work but it's more of a job to him than something he is naturally interested in. They are both good, but the guy with the associates is better all around. Again, this has everything to do with the person, not the degree they received.

Another thing... we have some real hard times with communication/cultural barriers between our typical American IT/Business folks and our Indian counterparts.... this is a big thing during interviews, I often feel bad but we will all simply agree its too difficult to communicate with them and pass.

Often times it is the Indian females, they are so damned quiet... like they think were gonna hit them with a baseball bat if they get above a certain decibel.... anyone else encounter this kinda thing with interviews and/or co-workers?

Engineers are really odd fucking people. The dumbest smart people you'll ever meet with some really odd personality quarks. You'll get some normal ones sometimes but I would say 70% seem like they have Aspergers.

Yes, I have certainly encountered some of this at work. Some of the Indian men try to dominate conversations and talk over people, especially women. I love watching the American women put the Indian men in place, it's brutal and fun to watch. The Indian men also project that they know more than they actually do. I see it as kind of a sport catching them doing this. They are better than they used to be but a lot of them are a pain in the ass to work with. Some don't understand that they are in the U.S. corporate environment where women are equal to men, we don't care where solutions come from (man woman black white ) we just want solutions. Yes, Indian women are usually very quiet to begin with but open up once they figure out we appreciate their ideas and want to hear their opinions.

toot toot!

I feel like I was a "go getter" when I started my current job just over 7 years ago, but it wanes over time, especially when department morale is in the toilet (and your manager is almost criminally stupid -- it's like "why bother?"). Now we all make fun of the enthusiastic new guy because I'm Richie Incognito

I know what you mean after doing 18 years of the corporate grind, believe me. However, I move around and change positions when I really need something different. I am in a very technical position, but I do enjoy it and the learning. I do get sick of the same old red tape and politics. first line Management is laughable here. Sometimes I'm shocked at how much they get paid for virtually doing nothing.

I know what you mean about first line... and how they never shitcan them because it would reflect negatively on their hiring them or promoting them in the first place.

In this Company I'm not sure it's a promotion. They generally promote people that can't handle the technical or business side, so they stick them with pushing HR paperwork and resolving people arguments. The odd part is that it's a pay increase.

I could never work there. Way too much bureaucracy for my taste.

Like my boss's son, who is supposed to be my manager, and worked on something all morning until I went back there and fixed it in 5 minutes.

It just depends where you work really. I'm in one of the cutting edge tech areas so they basically leave us alone. It has a lot more good about it than bad, trust me.

Agree with all but that last sentence.... 2 Indian girls on our Dev team and honest to god in 2 years I have heard each of them speak under 10 times.

I have had short work convo with them once or twice from 2 feet away and I strain to hear what they are saying.

And its not like we try to stifle them, we try to get them to open up a bit but they keep quiet like they are housewives at home making curry crusted curry-curry.... wtf is with all the curry, its too much! :D

That's cool. My brother and sister both like it a lot too...I just couldn't see myself doing well there. I bore really easily and hate red tape etc.

You would do fine, brainwashing and assimilation happen very quickly. =)
