Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely no horse in this race, I'm not a Cubs fan nor am I a Sox fan. I'm a casual Cubs observer who follows them enough just to have an opinion.

From an outsiders point of view at this point in time it looks like Theo Epstein has absolutely no clue what he's doing. He seems like he's in way over his head and to boot he's in lock step with the organization on why they aren't spending money on the team. Even worse it seems as though the media is even more clueless.

The Cubs aren't competitive and if these hot shot prospects don't blow up at the major league level when they finally arrive which is itself playing with fire when will the Cubs be competitive again?

I'm aware the Cubs have a dynamic set of young players and are building their team from the farm system up after neglecting to do so for many years. But there if these guys don't pan out the entire blue print Epstein has brought forth will cave in upon itself and you'll be starting all over again.

And lastly where is the pitching? Nothing gets a team through or builds an organization like pitching does. Look at the Oakland A's as an example, year in and year out they have one of the best staffs in major league baseball and when they haven't they haven't been competitive.

I mean Wrigley field in bad shape but Oakland Alameda Coliseum has raw sewage pouring out of their locker rooms and dugouts. They're a small market team that wins on a budget while the Cubs are a massive market team that refuses to compete with a GM that should know what moves to make to make the Cubs competitive.

What's it going to take for the Cubs to end this languishing at the bottom of baseball in the best city in the country with some of the best baseball fans in the world? This isn't just Chicago's team, this is a national team a team for America and yet nothing ever seems to change.

Simple answer: No.

But neither do 10's of thousand Theo Blister Lippers either, so he can get away with it.

theo had 200 million dollar payrolls in boston. it's easy to find "gems" when you've already got curt shilling, johnny damon, pedro martinez, david ortiz, bill meuller, etc. on your team. and that's just 2004.

You do realize that he Theo Epstein brought Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, Bill Mueller and others to the 2004 Red Sox?

I would ask industry people about Theo.

They seem to think he has a clue.

SERIOUSLY??

You are using "I'm at work" as an excuse for having the very basis of your criticism of Theo 100% incorrect???

You have just exposed yourself as knowing absolutely nothing about the very situation you are commenting on!!

BearFan51 must be bored waiting for the draft to come over here and ask such a ridiculously stupid question.

For the first time in 50 years the Cubs have real depth of talent in the farm system. Theo is planting seeds instead of shopping for far more expensive, fully grown plants with little time left to live.

People IN the business all agree he is doing it right and the Cubs will be a force to be reckoned with. But fans can't stomach that.

Ignorant people think it is better to win 72 than 69. It isn't.

But seriously.....in case I state things that are 100% off base and completely opposite of the facts, I will be sure to say "I am at work".

WOW!!

Oh I agree 100% here. Theo is a smart dude, Ricketts is the guy I don't trust.

Having to slash payroll $25 mil in year 1, I'm not sure many GM's could do a better job. If they get to 70 wins this year they will have essentially turned over almost the entire roster and will be in a better place from a payroll stand point. Instead of having a lot of aging players making $15-18 mil they will have younger players making $10 mil tops. To me that's pretty impressive if it happens. I get that some people don't see 70 wins as an accomplishment. However, the front office really did have limited resources. $25 mil is probably 2 pretty good players. It was essentially A-Ram and Pena off the 2011 team that won 71 games. It also meant having to find more players for 2013 that they couldn't add in 2012 because of having to slash that money.

So, as I've been pretty consistent saying, if people want to complain about the approach in my opinion it should be an ownership issue not a front office one. The biggest complain is "they aren't spending." That's because they have a smaller budget for whatever reason and according to Theo the past 2 years he spent every penny he had to spend. There really shouldn't be any complaints about the draft. By in large their trades have been decent. What the front office has done has been good it is just that they need more to be competitive and that by in large starts with money.

Farm system was just as good in the early 2000's. People need to learn history. Not hating on Theo and the farm. I love the farm but its just facts.

Eh, you dont know any of that. You dont know what another GM could have done. He spent 4 years 52 mill on Jackson but wouldnt sign a cleanup hitter. Theo isnt as bad as people say but he hasnt shown any type of Billy Beanesque things here. Oh and btw Boston wanted Bean before Theo. If Beane take the Boston job, the baseball world probably doesnt know Theo. I am not bashing just facts. Beane has done more than any other GM with less.
